Causes of Lichen Sclerosus?

What do you think caused your condition?

Any ideas, theories, inklings? A complete brainstorm opportunity....

I was just about to make a post but think it will fit in your discussion.  I have alsways thought that getting my tubes tied brought this on.  and did some searching and found that there is post tubal ligation syndrome.  I have many symptoms of this.  many changes happened after my tubal including getting LS.  Just was wondering if any one else got LS after having a tubal ligation.

Stress, carbohydrate and sugar bingeing and old age (70)

Interesting sha1271,  I also had my tubes tied aged 30

My theory for mine is definitely hypothyroidism

I also developed large under the skin boils/ cyst type things ( can't remember the name)

I believe these are all down to an auto immune disorder but bloods are fine with the exception of my CRP which is elevating

My lichen isn't too bad overall but flares up time of the month.

I have also developed an intolerance to the hair being near it and causes a flare up

Not sure what other folks think? Xx

To add to the other ladies, I've had two children (14 and 4)

And had many cysts and 5 lots of keyhole surgery.

Still get a lot of pain in the left side at time of the month despite having my tube and ovary removed nearly 5 years ago x

I had mine tied at age 31 and soon after developed symptoms of LS.  I do also have the symptoms of hypothyroidism.  going to find a better dr. and take a couple check lists and talk to them about it.  although I read most Drs. will deny the Post tubal syndrome because its the surgeon who causes it by cutting blood suply to ovaries.  would love to be tested for both though. gotta find a dr. willing to listen to my theory and concerns.

During one of my ops they managed to stitch my ovary to my bowel

Painful but had to wait for stitches to dissolve!

Of what I see here, there are similarities:  Thyroid problem, first hyper then hypo by RAI.  Then at age 42 a total hysterectomy.  Later diagnosed with adrenal gland malfunctioning.  Always severe menstrual pain before the hysterectomy.  Combo of female organs and thyroid-adrenal.

I breastfed 2 children for a total of 5 years straight.  My second was allergic to everything and I had to change my diet to accomodate his allergies.  We also spent time in the hospital.  I was not a stressed person before and I was very stressed trying to figure out what he was reacting to.  I couldn't give up on breastfeeding as it supported him.  It was around that time that the LS symptoms developed.  I was 31.  So hormone fluctuations over a long period of time, stress and a family history of autoimmune conditions.

Hi Marey

I have just been diagnosed by my GP although I am waiting on an appointment with a dermatologist.  I am 53 and going through the menopause and she said it is common in menopausal females.

The only things I can think of in my case are

1. A link with auto-immune disease. I have had ulcerative colitis, from which thankfully I recovered with medication and, apart from one or two minor flare-ups, have been clear for several years.

2. Over-enthusiastic washing - I used to use soap and get a really good lather going which was quite difficult to rinse off, then vigorous towelling dry.

I was in my 60s when I developed LS, not a specially stressful time so can't blame that, have no thyroid problems, all gynae problems behind me (I had a total hysterectomy aged 50), never had a Tendency to get thrush or cystitis, so a mystery apart from those 2 things.

Sha, that crossed my mind, too. I had LS as a child and all my life, but I'm convinced having the tubal ligation set up the Koebner phenomenon (trauma triggers the disease) and made LS progress faster in my five years of perimenopause.

Actually Dr, Goldstein says it's reported more in post-menopausal females and pre-pubescent girls because they have itching and burning. Women with a full complement of hormones may be having loss of architecture and pain with sex, but they generally don't come in if there's no continuous discomfort.

Chrissie, I did the over-enthusiastic sudsing/scrubbing for a decade after I saw the atrophy (but didn't mention it to a doctor). *headsmack*

Thank you sha...what was on your mind?

how might you have framed the question? thank you very much for your feedback ...what you're saying makes complete sense...did you experience a lessening of oestrogen? ... more vaginal dryness and skin coarseness among other things? And then LS. That is major sha I am so sorry.

you had tubal ligation as well morrell?

thanks TBfriend ..

that sounds like me too ie....stress no1

hang on TB ...was this your causation? or are you more recently diagnosed? did you experience symptoms post ligation?

oh no darkangel...i'm so sorry.

you've had quite a bit of surgery ....including something equating to tubal ligation...so this cause  of LS onset seems to be featuring quite a bit.
