Hi everyone I think my 7 year old has child anxiety he worries about going to school...when it is bedtime he worries about the next day...yesterday he was hysterical about going to school so I kept him off and I took him to school and he was hysterical outside the school gates so I brought him home! I haven't told him off because I think they is something deeper and you can't tell a anxious child off. I've sat him down and spoke to him about what is making him so scared off school, I know I shouldn't off kept him off but I could see fear in him and I suffer from bad anxiety but I don't show this to him I wear a Happy confident mask when I'm around him, my husband is gonna go mad!!!! I have a lot of mental health problems on my side of the family, schizophrenia, anxiety and depression, he's OK now, now that he is at home with me, he's happy, but I'm worried about him. I've told the teacher about his anxiety and a school psychiatrist comes in on a Tuesday and Wednesday and I've had a meeting with him. I'm dreading taking him to school on Monday.
Have you considered cognitive behavioral therapy with a psychologist? Blood work for deficiencies? Avoid SSRI'S especially for kid's. Psychiatrists are good at pushing pills.
I agree with therapy, especially for a child his age and I dont think doctors would prescribe someone so young with any medication. At an impressionable age its important to be sensitive and delicate and importantly not to overthink or put a negative emotion on school. Speaking from experience I was terrified of school when I was younger to the point I would cry and I say its just part of being a child and having to be away from parents.
If you do believe its an issue I would recommend sitting down and talking about why he doesnt want to go to school or maybe speaking to teachers to accomidate some extra support for his nerves. If that doesnt work then I would consider therapy such as CBT.
Best wishes with you,
Kyle
