hi I have suffered from chronic overbreathing since around 2004-2006. I was diagnosed with an inner ear disorder in 2004 which left me with permanent vertigo and as the years went on anxiety and stress led to chronic overbreathing and its torture all day every day. I also have a deviated septum so that just adds to the joy of it all. As a result my muscles are permanently agony from head to toe. I have severe fatigue to the point of finding it hard to hold my phone or walk for more than a few minutes..my muscles burn like I've run a marathon. I wake up and my muscles have no energy right from the get go. I also get nerve pain too. For years I've felt like 200 years old and I'm only 36. I've been scared I have motor neurone disease as my muscles are so weak and twitch all the time but tests this year were fine. Does anyone else have muscle issues as a result of their chronic hyperventilation? Has anyone had this for as long as I have? I also have other issues I believe are a result of the over breathing
I am so sorry you’re going through this. I’m sure it must be very frustrating for you. don’t worry about the twitching because muscle twitching is very common with anxiety and stress. I have had it for over 40 years! Not constantly but when I get anxious and stressed out. It is not harmful. Many athletes get muscle twitching also with how they use their muscles. It’s called benign fasciculation‘s. Another thing that’s very common with anxiety and stress is muscle weakness. That’s another thing I had and at one point I couldn’t even get off the couch. I too thought something was really wrong. But nope. all of my testing was normal. That was many years ago and I am very healthy and doing well.
hyperventilation is also common with anxiety. It may be the number one symptom that people get.
what really helps me with hyperventilation is practicing my breathing. YouTube has some excellent breathing meditations you can practice with. They can help calm you down. If you’re feeling really anxious, search for something on YouTube called stop panic attacks now. Then scroll down to one called don’t panic. It’s in black bold letters. She will guide you through your anxiety and it’s very effective!
have you ever talked with a specialist in pain management?
i do you hope you can get some relief. What about speaking with a counselor who can help you manage the anxiety? You could even do a virtual counseling like I do. It’s great you don’t have to leave your home! And it really helps to vent to somebody else. Take care ![]()
hi
Thank you so much for replying. I’ve been under the hospital for my anxiety and breathing. I do exercises every day but because I’ve been breathing so abnormally for so long I can’t seem to break the habit. I’ve also tried antidepressants and therapy. I tried magnesium for my muscles but it didn’t make any difference. I’m worried I will get motor neurone eventually as my muscles are being constantly over worked just like athletes do and lots of them are getting ALS. I find it hard to just walk around my house or lift anything because the fatigue is so bad. I’ve felt like I can’t breathe for 16 years straight and my body is wrecked because of it. A specialist said my breathing pattern was totally wrong many years ago. Thank you for your input. Take Care of yourself ![]()
