Chronic Prostatitis

Hi guys ,

I’ve recently had another flare up of prostatitis. Feeling of full rectum , pain in groin and lower abs and this time more worryingly I cannot pee at all .

I know from personal experience that stress is a contributory factor but this has come on heavy for no apparent reason . My last URUndod seem to think that I had a bladder blockage and that may be the underlying cause . I’m having a cystoscopy in a couple of weeks and I hope that can give me some answers .

Does anyone know of any other causes for a flare up ?

Thanks guys

Darren

Am there right now -- with prostatitis -- but gaining on it.

My own "research" discovers a topic that many uro docs seem reluctant to touch upon:  the male orgasm and its role in prostatitis.

Put simply, too much is asking for trouble. Think of your prostate as a muscle that can be overworked.,

(Too little, btw, can actually remove a possible defense against prostate cancer.  Or so I have read and learned.)

(And if there any uros reading this, perhaps they can address why most guys seem never to hear the word "orgasm" as part of their patient consult.  That's not good, given the possibility/probability that too much of a good thing can be a bad thing.)

As for my own treatment ongoing right now:  prescription sulfameth (Bactrim) for 3 weeks, advil at night for inflammation...and restricting fluids after 7pm.  So far...it's helping by about 70% on the misery scale..

(I also wonder whether weight around the middle can aggravate urinary urgency -- the belly pressing on the bladder as you turn in your sleep at night.  So I am also making every effort to slim down.  I have gone from 265 to 240 on a 5'11" frame.  Good...but hardly good enough.)

Good luck to you.

Owen, did you do anything different prior to the flare-up ? For me, it's usually a long bumpy bus ride, and/or too much sitting, and/or constipation, and/or too much gas trapped within the colon. The more of the above, the worse it gets since they all contribute to too much irritation to the prostate, causing inflammation. Of course, belly weight is not helping either.

I found laying down or light walking instead of sitting helped, as well as anti-inflammatory like ibuprofen or naproxen. Hank

Great question Hank.

My routine is a combo of sitting at a computer (as I am right now)...and working 24 hrs per week delivering auto parts in retirement. (I am a spy if not overweight 72). The job is great exercise and not taken for the income. So at 72, I am getting sufficient physical activity that does not involve sitting -- except when driving.  But my symptoms have been as I described them -- pesky prostatitis or what seems like prostatitis that is relieved by Bactrim, for now, and restricting  fluids after 7 pm.   Flomax is in the mix only temporarily, if I understand the doc correctly.  I guess I'll know more a month from now, but this condition requires serious strategy and war on multiple fronts.
