Citalopram Gave me panic attacks!!!

Please help I've just upped my dose from 20mg to 40mg... Today is day 3 and I picked up something heavy and nearly banked out, had to bend over to regain consciousness... All of a sudden one hour later I started to feel funny and have his urge to rate fast I presume it's apical attack... I didn't know what was going on vision went all funny etc... Is this normal?? Plus every morning I wake up with burning mouth syndrome once I take my tablets of 4mg it goes away... I'm taking citalopram for anxiety and depression... Is all this normal please help me?!

I know it seems strange but I had a couple of horrible panic attacks a couple days after starting 20mg cit much worse than before I was taking the med. I've been on them about 5 weeks now still kinda nervous but nothing as bad as in the beginning. I guess you get worse before you get better?  I was also lightheaded, felt pressure in my head, just all in all weird.  Anyway feel a whole lot better now & I bet you will too after some time!

james10000  It certainly is NOT normal. I had the same reactions when taking Tramadol. Pharmacist said simply it didn't suit me! I can't for the life of me understand why you suddenly doubled your dose! These medications should never be played with like this. The affect the workings of your brain which is reacting in the only way it knows how to WARN you this is not for you! Stop doubling the dose. Your body is telling you something so do not ignore it. You can't suddenly come off this drug. To do so you must half the dose first for 4 days, then half it again and take for another 5 days and finally you can come off entirely. You must instead tell yourself these medications are NOT for you. Try to do what we have advised another poster: go fishing, start cooing elaborate meals for yourself  - in short find something to do that will keep your mind open and receptive to doing things that occupy you. I cannot understand why in the UK GP's, NOT specialists, are prescribing these anti-depressants to people with slight problems, like restless nights, imagined worries and other mundane problems. It seems to be their first port of call! Your reactions are showing YOU Citalopram does not suit you. Always talk to a pharmacist! They were involved with research of these medications at the inception. They KNOW about them and don't need to consult a tome. Tell your pharmacist what you have experienced. Clearly this medication acts on the BRAIN. Don't interfere with yours. Towards the end of your post you mention '4mg'.  Did you mean 40? Stop being anxious and just keep writing to us on here!  Believe me it helps to discuss problems even if you don't know any of us personally - in fact that is better. I happen to believe writing about something gets it off your chest and even anxiety can be alleviated once you share your worries. Try laughing! It is the best medicine. Laugh at yourself too as this is a good sign. Just imagine you upped the dose to double and then couldn't understand why you fell down. You know why this happened! You just wrote about it to us! Gradually come off this drug. Go out for a walk. Borrow a dog to walk or get one. And start thinking about thousands of others who are far worse off than you are. Now do keep writing on here as it will be of enormous help. We are your friends.

For me... That was all normal infact my symptoms were a lot worse I had; a swollen tummy, brain zaps, exhaustion, extreme panic attacks and insomnia. Plus I couldn't eat for 3 weeks. You must remember it is still very early days for you and it takes about a month for the drug to kick in and work. I know the side effects are horrible. Trust me , I've been there. However I feel great now and back to my old self. Keep with the drug because once your body is used to it, you will feel great too. Also going from 20mg to 40mg in 3 days is a massive jump, I would honestly say stick with 20mg for 3-4weeks. This is coming from a girl who had major anxiety and only saw a black tunnel. You can do it xxx it will get better
