Has anyone got a colostomy or recently had the op. It is possible this is what i will need in the near future and i am terrified as i swim three times a week at a class. Have faecal incontinence which is making me more and more housebound.
My husband had a colostomy and he had no problems re swimming etc. smaller pouches etc are available. Speak to your designated nurse or GP. They are very helpful.
I am terrified of the whole idea. I have suffered with diarrohea for 20 years since having my gallbldder emoved. Since having a hysterectomy in 1999 i seem to have poor anal sphincter control and now have accidents which are ruining my life completely. I am terrified of more major surgery in case more nerve damage occurs. Had two C sections for my children and an ectopic pregnancy so have already had five abdominal operations in my lifetime. How do colostomys cope with diarrohea, that is my main worry. Will i continue to have accidents which are so humiliating.
Hi Susan. I have no experience with colostomies but they are recommending my son have one at least temporarily while recovering from a related surgery. The GI Specialist assured me a colostomy will not keep him from leading a normal life including swimming and playing sports. In regard to incontenance, your colon will empty into the colostomy bag so you will not have anything come from your anus. I was told by 2 different doctors that colostomies were very easy to deal with and very clean. Good luck!
