Confused about urinalysis results

I was at the doctor last week and mentioned a mild pain I've been having for a while In my lower abdomen and she did a urine test. She came back in the room and said I have some blood in my urine and something about red blood cells, but not to worry it's probably just a lingering uti. It was sent away for a urinalysis and she also ordered an ultrasound which I haven't had yet. But when I called the office back a couple days later for the urinalysis results the receptionist said everything came back negative. So my question is does a urinalysis test check to blood in urine and it must have been a false reading at the doctors office, or did I have blood in my urine? So confused can someone please explain, thanks

Blood in urine can come from  causes other than infection.  It can be from kidney stones, heavy exercise, etc.  If you have a followup visit, be sure to ask about it..  If you passed a very small stone, or have a stone in your bladder, that could account for the pain.

Thanks for replying, what I meant was that if blood in urine was detected by whatever type of test they would use at a gp's office, but the same urine sample was then sent away to a lab for further testing, and the results from the lab came back negative for everything. Does that mean that I never did have blood in my urine and it was a false reading at the doctors office? or does the lab not usually test for blood and I really did have blood in my urine ?

Becca, you need to ask for clarification from your doctor on that. Doctors tend to just give your results and not explain, but it is important that they do because you need to know how to treat your symptoms and why the results were negative.

So, go for it...it's important to see this through.

Good luck !
