Confused and Worried: HSV

So in July, i went to get a blood test for all STD’s including Herpes and all of the results came back negative except for HSV-2. I was so startled when i saw my results because i have never had anything positive such as a STD; only positive thing was BV! However, i am really confused if i even have it because i never had a breakout or anything-i know it can lie dormant but still. I spoke to my gyno. and she basically told not to worry about her and doesnt understand why the nurse would give it to me anyway because she believes a culture test is more accurate to give a diagnosis.

so honestly i dont know what to do i also have HS (a skin condition which causes boils). I did get a swab test but came back as negative. so i want to know if i have it or not

Unless it was a false positive (unlikely but possible), you’ve clearly been exposed and likely infected at some point. Its possible it could have been in your mouth or throat and so you never associated it with an STD.

Otherwise it may have been a very mild or asymptomatic genital infection (this could happen for several reasons including being exposed consistently for a time prior to being infected or simply being infected by a weak strain of the virus).

Either way, don’t write it off. It’s important that you inform any future sexual partners even if you’ve never noticed an active infection, because it looks like you do have the virus, and, well I’m sure you can imagine why that’s important.
You also will need to inform your most recent past sexual partner.

Im sorry youre going through this. You’ll be ok though. Its a very good sign that you havent noticed any outbreaks- because its possible you never will.

by the way. you are not alone at all. With all the casual sex people in our generation have, this is EXTREMELY common…about half of my friends who are into the club/bar scene have caught this or another std. (and also by the way, unlike what you hear, Chlamydia is actually incurable also–so youre even less alone. (dont ask my why they teach us the opposite in school…its clearable, but they they cant kill the endospores it leaves, which reinfect over time and cause UTIs).

also consider that anyone in your future who decides they would like to spend their life with you will think NOTHING of this. Seriously. If I met a girl I actually wanted to marry and start a family with, this would be so minor. My advice is to get involved with people who date in more traditional ways…like alot of church communities are this way, where dating is just that-going on dates, with exclusive dating usually not even happening until after accepting an engagement ring. (This is how things were like a hundred years ago for everyone, and its a better way to date anyway in my opinion). This sort of traditional “dating culture” removes basically all the issues that a virus like this could cause; like since dating like that is so much closer to being platonic, it removes the pressure to disclose this stuff early on, before someone has a chance to get to know you, but without making anyone feel like you were trying to get them emotionally hooked first.

In the end, all you’ll have lost will be the casual sex lifestyle, which is overrated anyway.

of course it could still be a false positive. Maybe like a 5% chance of that?

i totally agree. crazy thing is after my most current, i said i would remain celibate until marriage. i just didnt want to start it off as such. All will be fine and i still pray for healing and deliverance. i also did inform my most recent partner and we were dating/together for a year. i recently found out he was sleeping with another woman. he says he does not have it but honestly i dont believe him.

thank you.
