Connection between infection in tooth(or in tooth has had root canal) and stomach problems.

Dear all,

Does anyone know there may be any connection between infection in tooth and stomach problems like severe bloating, cramps and irregulars stool(sometimes constipation and other times diareha)?

Best wishes

I have a connection between the heart and bacteria from teeth. You would have to check it out, but I don't see why this wouldn't happen with yr tummy too . Best Wishes.

Oops, I meant I have heard of a connection with tooth bacteria and the heart....I haven't got one !

I don't know if there is any definitive connection, but my IBS started much around the same time as my dentist found infection in a number of teeth that required root canal work. Could simply be a coincidence of course.

I heard of someone who was being treated for IBS and then developed a tooth infection which was treated with antibiotics.  After finishing the antibiotics, the IBS disappeared.

Its entirely possible yes. Our entire digestive track is linked to our brain. (like everything else) so its very possible that its caused your IBS. Hope it eases up for you soon.

Without a doubt i believe there would be a connection between teeth and bowels. You could have got an infection without you realising and that would enter your blood and then could cause stomach problems. I do know for sure when all my ibs and later diverticulosis started and that was when i was much younger and i had so much trouble with abcesses re-occurring on a regular basis on and off for years and i was was on antibiotics for a long time over the years but i never made the connection until someone told me that was why i started to have so much trouble with my stomach and bowels which caused my ibs etc.Any infection in you body can have an effect on your stomach such as you have described. Maybe you could ask your dentist or go visist the doctor. Best Wishes Sue.

Yes, I believe that there is a connection between your stomach and your tooth infection. I had an infection of the gum right at the back of my mouth which gave me terrible nausea, I was given treatment and the stomach ache mostly cleared up, I have been suffering chronic stomach problems (nausea, acid reflux) and nothing has come back on tests, not h.pylori, not intolerant to food, but suspected histamine intolerance or gastroparesis as I have tried all sorts of elimination of food groups, went on fodmap and now I am on the gaps diet, hopefully a specialist appointment with a gastroenterologist will diagnose next week

Two months ago I went to dentist and she detected in infection in my tooth thah had root canal five years ago. I remember my stomach problem started a few months after doing root canal. It took worse and worse monthly till 4 days ago when the dentist treated my infected tooth, although one step of treatment is remain. I did not say my digestive problem to my dentist. Since four days ago I feel very very better. I can say bloating completely gone in a bad estimation 90 percent has got healed. But I think there is still minor problem. Because my stomach still make cramps in some situation but better than before retreatment of root canal. I hope get well compltely. Thank you.

Glad you are feeling much better

Interesting one.
