After having the Rezum performed in May 2016, the urinary retention improved drastically. Then last week I was in a state of high anxiety, for three consecutive days I was unable to void or defecate, and had to resort to self cathing. My fear was that the prostrate had become reoccluded, if that is the correct term. At any rate I called the Cleveland Clinic and Dr. Ulchalker, who performed the Rezum, returned my call within an hour.
He opined that heavy fecal accumulation could be responsible or it could be a UTI. So I opted for the Miralax option and within six hours, and several trips to the bathroom, I was able to void again. Today I voided 650ml.with a PVR of 150ml. Unfortunately my GI specialist has not been especially aggressive in treating the constipation, so I'm trying some different options on my own.
I'm completely satisfied with the Rezum and hope that if anyone has it performed, their experience will be pain free both peri and post operative, as was my case.
Thanks David - I think I have a similar problem. Did the Miralax fix your constipation for several days afterwards or did the constipation/retention return after awhile. I tried Dulcolax and it too worked but then after a few days I was back in the same problem. Also my GI guy is not much help - must be universal. Thanks and good luck.
I had been taking a prescription medication for constipation, Linzess,in the morning, and OTC stimulant laxaties (sennsonides) in the evening, but it got to the point where they lost their effectiveness. Two days after the Miralax purge, the Linzess and OTC worked, how long that will last remains to be seen. I have consistently eaten a high fiber diet.
There are so many laxatives and enemas on the market I've decided to go with trial and error. The GI doctor is pushing for a second colonoscopy, they can be quite lucrative. I'm very cynical on GI doctors.
Both constipation and urinary retention can cause varying degrees of abdominal discomfort. The urinary part can be controlled with CIC, but predicting when laxatives will kick in is very difficult.

Hi David,
I just took a Dulcolax pill which I hope will help. It is clear that the "poop" retention in the rectum and the urine retention in the bladder due to my BPH are causing mutual and reinforcing inflammation. Maybe this pill will break the log jam and this awful cycle. I have a few (3) prednisone pills left over from an asthma bout last summer and have though of taking those over 3 days to try and break the inflammation so things can settle down. I'll let you know. I do drink a lot of water every day ( 4 -half litre bottles ) and take Benefibre twice a day but nothing seems to work. I too hate GIs - they are just glorified plumbers in my opinion. I wish Drano were safe!! Good luck to you.
