Continued thigh pain

Morning hipsters!! Is there anything I can do about this thigh pain??? It has gotten me really down and frustrated. I'm taking gabapentin and using the voltaren gel on the thigh. I also have been using the Aspercream to try and get this sensitivity under control!! Quality of life for me is not so good. I struggle to stay happy especially with family. What do y'all think? Is this something that will get better?? I mean right now even a soft blanket bothers me!! 😭😭. I'm at the end of my wits!! My thigh especially in the side just below butt to knee is numb and sensitive. 😭

Hi Linda,

So sorry to hear about the pain you are going through.  It sounds as though it's more to do with your nerve endings and anything to do with your hip, especially when you say that even a soft blanket bothers you.  Have you seen a specialist for this?

Best wishes,

Kim

Hi Kim!! Yea I'm wondering if I need to see someone other than my dr who did the surgery. And if so who??? It feels like I traded one pain for another!! I hate that when i go to visit family or go on vacation i gotta take my heating pad and my gel pad that i freeze in freezer. And you know alot

Sorry hit button too soon as I was say a lot of hotels have small fridge but not necessarily a freezer. And I need to lie down and take pants so nothing is touching my thigh. I still have to take my tramadol, 1/2 a pill to take edge off. But running out. Have had them since aug. Dr won't give me anymore so use them sparingly. 😥

Linda,

I would check with you family doctor.  He/she can refer you to a nerve specialist.  In the meantime, I looked up nerve pain in legs and this is what I found:

Many medical conditions are associated with both pain in the legs and fatigue, and determining the cause of these symptoms requires a trip to the doctor or podiatrist. To make a diagnosis, your doctor or podiatrist needs a thorough understanding of your history, including what brings on your symptoms, what improves them, and what other symptoms occur. Leg pain can range from a mild nuisance that comes and goes, to debilitating pain that makes it difficult to sleep, walk, or engage in simple everyday activities. Leg pain and numbness can be experienced in many forms, for which some patients describe the pain as aching, searing, throbbing, or burning.

Pain in the legs can occur as a result of conditions that affect bones, joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments, blood vessels, nerves, or skin. Leg pain can occur in the foot, ankle, knee, behind the knee, thigh, down the back of the leg, or in any part of the leg. It can occur at night, while lying down, or while running or exercising, depending upon the cause. Also depending on the cause, leg pain can occur in one leg only, or in both legs.

Typically, the pain is a result of tissue inflammation emanating from injury or disease. Either injury or chronic disease can cause inflammation to any of the tissues of the leg leading to pain. Since the leg contains a number of different structures and tissue types, a wide variety of conditions and injuries can bring on pain.

Again, depending on the cause of the pain, other symptoms, like weakness, numbness, throbbing, cramps, aching, or a tingling sensation, may accompany the pain. Diabetic neuropathy (nerve damage from diabetes), is a common cause of tingling, burning, and numbness in the legs that can at times be painful. For diagnostic and therapeutic purposes, it is important to pinpoint the exact type and location of any pain in the legs. Peripheral artery disease can cause claudication - pain that occurs in the legs usually when walking or exercising. Blood clots (deep vein thrombosis), can be another cause of leg pain. Pain in the knee and ankle joint is common with the arthritic conditions. The pain of sciatica (from disc disease of the spine), may radiate down the leg and is another frequent cause of leg pain.

As you can see there could be many causes.  This list should be able to help narrow things down for you and your doctor.

Thank you Kim I appreciate the info. I'll definitely be calling dr to set up something

Linda,

Make some notes before you go of questions you have.  Also write down what makes the pain worse or less.  Sometimes doctor visits can be very daunting, and taking notes with you should help.

Good luck, and Keep us posted

Will do!!

I guess I should of mentioned this is coming from my operated leg. I'm thinking since I had to have 2 hip replacement surgeries within 3 weeks maybe another reason for my problems but it's getting me down. I feel like I have traded one pain for another.

That could very well be it.  They should give you more for pain though.

Hi Linda,

I had some nerve damage in my non op thigh which was to do with the position I was "clamped" into for the op and the fact I'm slim. My OS told me it happens rarely but that the nerves have been bruised and can take months. It is numb at the moment but he said as they are healing there will be a time when it is painful and to rub it hard to try and desensitise it. There is also a drug called amatryptaline which can help with nerve pain. I would go and get it checked out if I were you as it does sound like a nerve issue.

Take care,

Sam

Thanks Sam. I'll look into that. It's just so frustrating and annoying!!

dear linda,

I am so sorry to hear this, darling - you are such a trooper !!!

The article that Kimberlley posted explains a lot - I don't know what to tell you ..

Both my thighs, top and side, are still very sensitive and also aound the hip bones - not much pressure I can tolerate there either - Physical therapist told me that it might be scar tissue - deep tissue massage (very unpleasant and painful) does relieve it a bit ... Voltaren gel-Advil gel etc. does not help me -

It is not a pain pain, but definitely present -

My GP does not know what to do with except for keep doing what I am doing ... duh ... not helping ...

Could also the growing of bone tissue - I keep it at that ... and in your case  perhaps the manipulation of joint - the dislocation and then the revision surgery within 3 weeks ....

It is annoying and discouraging but it will get better ...

come here anytime, okay ... writing it out and sharing is therapeutic -

in the meantime, be kind and gentle with your self - your body is working so hard ..

big warm hug

renee

Morning Renee! So how long have you been having this? I didn't notice this till about 2 months later after the revision. It stings sometimes and burns and if anyone touches it I jump! Clothes too bother it too. Don't know what to wear!! 😩 I don't wanna be a trooper!!! 😥🤓

Hi Linda,  I just got back from the doctor because of my thigh pain and in groin area.  He took xrays and found calcification in the muscle where surgery was.   He said the only thing to do is take ibuprofin 3 times a day  600 mg each.  He put me on celebrex right after surgery  to prevent this calcification but it still happens sometimes.  I had surgery 4 mos ago.  Hope you improve.

Oh wow!! Did he say y this happened? My dr is referring me to a pain dr. This sensitivity is a real pain!! And if he can't help then referring me to nerve dr. I told him that I can put up with everything else but this!! It's really having an impact on my life. And I don't want to keep taking gabapentin. Will see what pain dr can do for me tomorrow as I have my appointment.
