Hi everyone,
Oh goodness I'm at my wits end with these muscle cramps in my groin and upper thigh. I get them roughly around 4-5 am most mornings. As a result my muscles are tired before I even begin the day!!
Is this normal? If anyone else has had them is there anything I can do about them?
Thanks 😊
Sending healing thoughts to everyone today 💗
Yes a lot of us got them. I found drinking tonic water before bed seemed to help. There have been previous threads on the subject so it may be worthwhile searching. Mine did not last very long, a week or two. Went as suddenly as theycame
It sounds awful, Jacqui! I tend to get leg cramps lots and have for many many years. But I seem to have less since surgery -- I think at first the drugs helped at first. Last night my legs were twitchy -- like I imagine restless leg syndrome would be. Anyway, the cramps sound horrible. I drink water all day with powdered magnesium in it. Might help. I took prescription quinine for a while. NOt sure it helped and I think there can be side effects. Stretching is always recommended. Good luck with them.....those cramps in the thighs are so painful! Hugs, Leslie
I was getting them in the beginning .. My surgeon put me on Flexeril a musle relaxer for leg cramps so bad that you wanted to jump up out of bed .but they were getting worse . My primary MD did blood work and found out that I was low on iron and potassium.. I started on iron pills and started to eat more foods high in iron and potassium .I stopped the iron pills bc along with the painkillers .I was getting constipated..so Im happy to say no more cramping or muscle spasm..I am 9 weeks post op to left hip. Only pain That I still have is left knee.hopefully it will stop soon.....Good Luck to you with ur recovery
Apart from tonic water I have heard that magnesium helps.
Thanks Leslie, will see how I go. At least I know it's pretty normal now 😊 Xx
Ok, I might just try and get my bloods done. Won't do any harm 😊 Thanks Bonnie for taking the time to reply xx
Hi Jacqui
I was getting these mainly when I was sitting or in bed. I tried everything with no success. Eventually someone told me that lack of magnesium can cause spasms and that having surgery can mean magnesium levels get low (I have no idea if that is right or not..... please dont quote me on it). So I tried taking some magnesium supplements and bingo no more spasms. I took them for 3-4 weeks then stopped and I havent had any more symptoms since.
Good luck
David.
I should have said that I took the supplement in the morning and the same evening I saw an improvement...
Aw thank you David, that's really helpful and fits in with what my practice nurse just said 😊
I'm going to try some and see how I go. I will post with the results later in the week.
Jacqui
Thanks for this discussion - I learned a lot from the postings.
Oops - and good luck. Please let us know how you do with the magnesium. I sure hope it works as I was plagued withe the spasms after my surgery and I getting my second hip done in September.
Lots of good notes piling up from recent postings.

Hi Jacqui there's nothing worse than cramp. I'm 6 months post op and I suffer with cramp in my foot all the time. Sometimes when I'm in bed it goes into my calf and I do t sleep more than 2 hours at a time and feel tired all day. I was advised on this forum to drink tonic water at night or take quinine tablets.
i hope this helps and keep us informed
