Crutches how long?

Week 3 after my hip replacement now find very comfortable walking around the house crutch free .

Read somewhere that if a crotch is required I always use 2 as using 1 could create a limp would appreciate your thoughts.

Hi Catherine,

Using only one crutch is not recommended as it will throw your alignment off, which could lead to other injuries.

Two is best, but I got myself a pair of cheap walking poles (nordic). The hand hold is so much kinder to shoulder muscles. The only downside is you cannot get as much support from them as proper sticks or crutches.

Catherine, I would be a little careful in trying to push to hard to soon. I used one crutch around the house at 2/3 weeks but two when out walking or shopping. Sometimes, pushing a little too quickly can create problems later. I used a walking stick from about week 10 when on daily walk as I still have a limp without support.

I had two hip replacements one in October 2018 and the other December 2018 and I was told to have equal balance and not favor one or the other! I recovered very quickly but had to use a walker and the second surgery because the right one was just done and I couldn’t favor the right over the left I had to stay pretty balanced I hope that makes sense

Catherine this is what I have been saying here for the last couple of years.<bg>

Cheers Richard

my physio told me i was fine using one crutch as i walked normally with it,i limped slightly if i didnt use it xx
