Day 1 post op!

Thanks to everyone for the kind words and support prior to my op, it went well, I had a spinal with minimal sedation, the anaesthetist said if I wanted more he'd give it. The staff were all fantastic and really looked after me. im theatre I chatted with the anaesthetist for a bit then had a sleep. Woke up just as they were finishing and was aware of my leg being moved and lots of banging but felt like it was happening to someone else! Moved my foot about and relieved that I had no nerve damage.

In recovery had more drugs and was very comfortable. It's very painful but I'm given a variety of meds to keep on top of it. Had a bit of a mini melt down this morning, feeling sorry for myself😕 Feel much better now

No weight bearing for 12 weeks as complex op with bone graft. Tried hopping with crutches this morning but blood pressure dropped so had to get back in bed!

It's going to be a slow process but I'm so glad it's all over. Just wish I had a walk in shower as mine is over the bath and been told can't use it for 12 weeks 😩

I'm in a 16 bed bay and most people have had THR and it's lovely to see them walking with crutches so soon after the op.

Lovely to hear from you Vicki and good to hear it went well.  Oooh, I donlt want to hear any banging eek

It sounds like you've been through the mill with your op but at least you're out the other side now and the only way is up.  I wish you a speedy recovery and hope you're soon up and about without your blood pressure dropping.  That may have been something to do with the pain relief.

Do let us know how it goes, always nice to hear daily updates if you feel up to it.

that sensation of knowing by the noise that something is going on, but not being able to feel it is very odd isn't it.

I couldn't move my feet until the spinal wore off.

Melt downs are fine - you have had a major operation, and it can be good to let off steam.

It is a slow process - I am 6 weeks post-op, and 4 weeks pre-op (my ceramic insert is in the wrong place, and has to be re-seated in January)

Best wishes for a speedy recovery

Get well carefully and consistently x

Hooray! So pleased for you vicki, now it's plenty of fluids, just enough pain meds, do your exercises and lots of rest. You'll soon be home.

Take care

Glad you are ok Vicki.  Hope you are soon up and about.

It was the same with me 2 years ago, spinal with very very mild sedation, i too could hear but was out of body and could not do anything.  This experience has always been fine, actually even interesting with me but when I tell people about it, they are usually horrified and i get a lot of OMGs.

Vicki  - Good one girl, now for the getting well. Best wishes

Vicki, great to know you are ok, and its all over for you, isnt it great , levyou i have a shower over the bath, but i manage, even manage to wash my hair ok now.  Just take it slow, as i get told its not a race, good luck hun, sleep well.

Hi vicki,

So pleased with your news. That will be a long time on crutches though. When you are non weight bearing you lose muscle and strength in your leg and buttock. Can't be helped I know, but you have to work hard to rebuild your fitness.

I am 12 weeks post op today and just beginning to feel strength returning. I was only 2 weeks NWB and it seemed ages. Having a "good wash" is very frustrating as you long to get properly clean. Is there anyone who could let you use their walk-in shower? Not something you can ask about easily, I know.

Hope you sleep well tonight, you deserve it.

Shirley

Poor you having to go through that again!

Thankyou!

Thankyou!

It was very strange but felt so comfortable and relaxed

Thanks lyne x

Thanks Sue I'm sure I'll find a way!

Thanks Shirley, I know I've got done hard work to do but will get there. I'll sort something out for the shower situation!

Kaleani - Finally somebody has found the words, out of body. I have been trying for a long time to describe my experience of being very lightly sedated during surgery. I too found it all just so interesting, for my second hip seeing my blood pressure was so normal, they kept me awake for a long time into my prep on the operating table, I was chattering away to the anthestist, perfect. And I do agree with you when you tell people sbout it, you have to have been there and done THR to understand I think.

Well done you!!!!! It is a massive achievement and relief when it is all over. I hope you are comfortable and resting.

I had Iow blood pressure too - it may take a few days to right itself but it will.

Huge hugs Rose x

Welcome to the 'awake when I had a THR' club - I thought I was the only one daft enough to have no sedation !

Agreed, it is SO odd, hearing the noises, but unable to feel what you know is happening to your body.  Out of body sums it up nicely.

Everyone seems horrified that I was awake when I tell them, but really I enjoyed chatting to the anethetist and hearing the surgeon at work.
