Damn toothache. Got an appt. Told dentist i was approx 10 wks post op. Before he would even look at me i had to be on antibiorics. He wrote a script for 4 pills all to be taken at once an hour of being aeen. Im in australia. Dentist 1.....me zero. . Im still in pain. Got to go back next wed.
From previous posts you will know that it used to be all dentists that put you on antibiotics before treatment after hip surgery, mainly because there are millions and millions of bacteria in the mouth and theory is that they could attach to the prosthesis and fester. Opinion differs these days and it is thought a healthy body can deal with it, but if he thinks you have an abscess he would give antibiotics anyway.
I am due a tooth fragment removed soon, I will have antibiotics an hour before and for 24 hours after
I checked with my dentist before treatment after my hip replacement. He said antibiotics not required now as guidelines now changed.
In Portugal take antbios 2 days before anything
where blood might be shed, continue for 7 day course,
for 2 years at least after hip op. I had to have colonoscopy.
you can only go with what your medics say.

I have been thinking about teeth, as I am somewhat overdue to see the hygienist. Better to get my mouth taken are of before surgery, I think, just in case there are problems, like infection lurking under root canal work!
All the best,
Susie
I went to the dentist Friday and took (4) 500mg Amoxicillian 1hr before appointment, my surgeon says this will be forever....
Hi Sassy
I've always had to have antibiotics before the dentist drills, but not looks at me. I'm in Australia too, and the dentist gives me a new script for the next time I come.
But waiting till Tuesday seems a bit harsh! Are you taking the antibiotics regularly? They could be a treatment. Usually I just have to take them an hour before I go in. I know they don't do that in other countries though
Hi all Denise checking back in .As I'm dental therapist here in uk and uk guidelines rec NO antibiotics required for dental treatment in doubt check N.I.C.E guidelines
Regards to all Denise
Hi sassy,
Better safe than sorry - Even if there is 0.01 % change infection, I'd go for anti-biotics - I am also looking at extensive dental work to be done -
I am sorry about your toothache ... sometime biting on a clove or rubbing clove oil on evil tooth helps - that is a long wait though ...
big hug
