Diagnosed with Hiatus Hernia today

Had my endoscopy this morning and............i have a hiatus hernia, that's all thank goodness!  Apart from continuing to try and lose weight, i need no surgery or anything.  Hopefully when i see my GP on Friday he/she will inform me best medication to go on for this as my current Omeprazole doesn't seem to be working anymore for me, they may have to increase my dosage to the maximum (80mg i think) or change me onto something else.  How do others on here with a hiatus hernia cope with their symptoms?

Hi, I have a Hiatus Hernia but a different type from yours I think. I have to have an op as my stomach has gone into my chest area and hernia has collapsed part of my lung. Sometimes this op isn't very successful so I have to have a chat with a surgeon before I decide but what else can I do. I am 70 yrs in a few weeks time and don't want to be wheelchair bound. I wish someone who has had this op would reply to me. Hopefully you will have new medication which will work for you. Good Luck.

Carina,

this operation is very successful. I have had the operation for your kind of hernia. The stomach that has pushed through the diaphragm does not go back on its own and it is very dangerous to leave it there. You have to have the operation. I. Am 68 years old, almost 69 now. There is no other cure for this. I found that the recovery time after the operation was quite quick. You will be on a special soft food diet after the operation .

hi Carina, well done for getting through your endoscopy, was it horrible?  I have got mine next Wed - eek!  I really struggle with the sypmptoms, mainly if I eat anything fatty at all (gall bladder has been written off) - I try and eat food in small amounts, usually sloppy, soups are good,no coffee or chocolate, sleep on a slope, just started trying aloe vera juice.   Good look and I wish you well, do post if you find anything that works!!

They said i don't need an operation so i'm not going to have one, i do have a lot of weight to lose though (about 5 stones) so will concentrate on that.  I'm just relieved that it was that.  I'm sure i can carry on normally with things i do can't I?

I won't lie, the endoscopy (my first one ever) was not a pleasant experience to say the least.  I chose not to be sedated so i just had the spray to numb the back of the throat.  I did nearly back out though but glad i went ahead with it in the end.  Do you have an idea what may be wrong in your case?

Morning Carina, thanks for the endescope info, my sypmtoms started about a year ago with intense pain under my ribs about half an hour after eating, severe relux, belching and then general tummy pain, bloating.  After many months my GP refered me to a consultant who said it was gall bladder, scan showed nothing. Two weeks ago I saw a surgeon, she is not convinced about gall bladder and wants to do an endescope, she then mentioned hiatus hernia. Symptoms sadly haven't got any better, does any of this sound familiar? Take care.

hello, looking back, i am wondering now if i have had this hiatus hernia for some time as the scan and endoscopy that i have recently had are the first tests i've had ie not had a scan in years and never had an endsocopy but i have had reflux for 12 years now and it's only over the last few weeks that i've felt worse with reflux and also had mild pain under my right rib (which made me think it was gallstones) and mild abdominal pain so i think my hernia has been picked up by chance - weird isn't it?  i'm hoping to discuss things with my GP on Friday and will let you know what they say.   The endoscopy will pick it up like they did with me yesterday.

Did they tell you after your endoscopy that you needed an operation?  it sounds like hernias are different with everyone so it probably depends where it is and how it is but have a chat with your doctors / surgeon etc and get their opinions first before you decide anything.

Hi Carina, yes, I too believe that I may have had this for some time given my previous history of reflux.  From what I can tell there are various types of hernia and I think different procedures to fix them, I am not jumping ahead though until I have the endoscopy, the only good thing is that the surgeon  I am under is doing the scope so I should know pretty quickly.  I do hope for all of us there is some refief, from this is a miserysad

What symptoms do you get with your hiatus hernia?  I have symptoms which i originally thought were related to gallstones before i had my scan and before i was diagnosed with a hiatus hernia.  My symptoms are sometimes mild upper abdominal pains, mild pain/discomfort under right rib going over to the back of my right shoulder blade.

I was diagnosed with a hiatus hernia last week and now find that i have lost my appetite first thing in the morning and could quite easily skip breakfast which is unusual for me as i normally feel hungry all the time.  Has anyone else notice loss of appetite first thing in the morning with hiatus hernia?
