I have just started returning to my primary teaching job after 5 months on long term sick due to WRS and depression. Although only work 25% of directed time ( same time is spent planning and preparing to be honest) I am getting dizzy episodes and have very poor concentration once back home. At the weekend I had a couple of driving errors, nothing serious but just could not manage it with a passenger talking to me. I’ve only noticed these problems going back to school, not when I was off sick. I know this drug can cause symptoms of “brain fog” and dizziness. Is this normal readjusting?
yes completely normal x
Hi Sally
It sounds normal to me. I took three months off work once but it wasn’t because of work related stress but health anxiety. I had dizziness a lot of the time. When I went back to work at my college I used to walk near the side of the corridor in case I couldn’t walk a straight line, it was a horrible feeling. The more I got back into my routine the less it became. I had a 50 mile round trip to my job and driving was also a challenge at first but it got better once my confidence grew. I’m sure yours will improve too with time. And yes, Citalopram can cause brain fog as a side effect but so can anxiety. I hope things settle for you very soon.
Dizziness and concentration was one of my biggest anxiety issues so I can totally relate. It may or may not be the citalopram it could be just plain old anxiety, returning to work is a change, and could be stressful for anyone. And even though the meds are working that little added stress can throw you for a little loop temporarily, just don’t let it. Try to relax, deep breaths and keep telling yourself that it’s just temporary and keep going about your day. I think you will do just fine!
If it seems to get worse, talk to your GP and tell them the situation, he can probably recommend something temporarily until you get back into the swing of things.
Best Wishes!
