I know that chronic means forever but does it mean it will take a long time to heal? Or does it mean I'm stuck with it forever?
Acute fissures generally heal in 2 weeks or less or up to 8 weeks. Chronic means you have a much deeper tear and take much longer to heal up to years. Some people have them for 20 years but is rare I would think. Make sure you drink a lot of liquids every day this is critical and takes your body 2 months to adapt to the liquids. Check my profile for a blog I wrote with tips. There is a list of foods you can try avoid, but you must be strict like going off coffee for 90 days else don't bother trying.
There some exercises you can try as well, all of this will help your fissure heal but will take time.
Surgery is a last resort solution, people have surgery only to have a fissure again after surgery. You can heal your chronic fissure by drinking water, exercises and various medications.
For me I took medication which lowers your blood pressure just like the creams do but it does it for your entire body instead of just your anus. This had an almost immediate effect and worked better than any of the creams I had taken.
Chronic fissures do not repair themselves.
Surgeons do
No chronic does not mean a long time. Chronic means how long can you take it. I finally got to the right MD who prescribed nifedipine mixed with lidocaine in an ointment. I used this inside using a snall Q tip to apply right inside. It healed halfway but I got a lot of relief and did not feel as if I was pasding glass with a BM. Also used calmosepine kept in compond pgarmacies behibd the counter and walmart has it behind the counter. This gives relief after a BM and handles that annoying itching and or burning inside. I suffered 1 year prior to meeting thus MD and trying the new med. Healed halfway then had surgery. Only a sphincterotomy. I have no more pain before during and after a Bm. Still have to take sitz baths after BM on occasion and apply calmoseptine for the itching. But I am 90 % better. Had surgery under general anesthesia it was over in 15 minutes and I am so happy I had the surgery. No more lying in the bed incapacitated,soaking in the tub 3 x a day. Carring a medicine bad every where I went. No extreme fear when I forget to take my stool softner. Dont suffer any longer talk with MD about surgery. I hope this helps you.

Yes. Fissure causes your anal sphincter to spasm and get real tight this is the whole problem with it not healing. Your bung hole gets so tight that blood can't flow to the fissure to heal. My doc said in my case which was going on for years, " it will never heal on its own". I had LIS too best thing I ever did. Complete success. No more issues... AND IT WAS VERY VERY BAD. Before surgery. .

Richard I can't tell you that I don't know how long you been going through this, but the longer it goes on the more chances it won't heal by itself.
Go see a call rectal specialist.

I am extremely blessed to report that I have had 0 issues since LIS. It was only a couple weeks of recovery. But more like a month to really be cured. I only went back to pre op. pain 1 time 1 day but every other day was better and better.. It is fully completely cured. I suffered for many many years when I did not have to. I unfortunately waited until I could barely mentally take the pain anymore and said to myself, even if I poop myself once in awhile because of surgery it will be a better life then this!!!! Is was so so bad.

My surgeon was John Park of LM Prasad in Park Ridge IL. He is the head of colorectal surgery at Advocate Lutheran General Hospital also in Park Ridge. I had a chronic fissure for 6 years and in the last year my sphincter was so tight I had to strain every time. He had me do an anal manometry test to test the strength of my sphincter to see if I could tolerate an LIS. I was so strong I brother the balloon! He said I could crack a walnut in my rectum! Anyway we did the LIS and it was 100% successful. No pain or fissure issues since. My sphincter is still fairly tight, but going to the bathroom is not usually an issue. I still have my sitz bath for the toilet standing by just in case. I had it done in October 2020 and it's January 20th today and I just had a BM a half hour ago. No problem! I also got a bidet a couple of years ago which has helped me use a fraction of the toilet paper I did. Get the surgery if you know your manometry shows you should be able to handle the cut.
