¿Realmente necesito una toalla?

I have a paper from the ward I will be in that says I should bring, among other things, a towel.  Do I really need to? Towels are heavy and I have other things to pack.

It is a gynaecological ward so maybe that instruction is meant for women who are long term inpatients. I'm just having one other operation.

Also, do hospitals discharge at the weekend? I am going in on Wednesday and supposed to be there for four days. Assuming all goes as planned, when should I expect to go home - over the weekend or the beginning of the next week?

I meant just one operation. Computer isn't letting me type properly.

That was supposed to say gynaecological cancer ward.

I had a leaflet like that saying bring towels which I did but when I got there was told hubbie could take them home as for discharge I went in on a Wednesday and came home on Friday but they do discharge on a weekend in Swindon but I don't know about other hospitals

Morning,

I was given a towel the 1st morning as i only took a couple of itens in with me on the morning of the op.My Dad was going to bring the rest of my things after my op but because there was confusion where i was as i didn't arrive to the ward until 9.30pm i never got everything else until the following evening. The next morning i also

wanted to get out of the gown and they supplied a nightie.I think it depends on the hospital.I had a TAH with BSO and i went in on a Tues and discharged the Fri.Normally doctors don't come round weekends unless there is an emergency.

Did they give you a bath towel or a hand towel?

I was given both

Hi. I was discharged on a Saturday for my first op so should be fine if that's when you ready to go. You might even go on the Friday. Some people don't like using hospital towels but most hospitals would provide if you needed them. You could always phone ward to double check. Good luck with op x

i had my op on Monday and i didn't take a towel in as same as you i felt adding a towel to my already quite full bag was too much to take in. The hospital supplied me with a normal size towel ie bigger than a hand towel but not a bath sheet, i don't think i would have been handle a sheet on first shower after op. I found it to be a very nice smelling, very clean towel as i'm sure they have to be boiled to within an inch of their lives (poor towels) to meet cleanliness guidelines. If you really want your own whoever visits you the first night after the op could bring one in for you

the hospital I went in provided towels and you can be discharged any day if you are well you could be out earlier that you expect

Hi Astropuppy

I was advised to take my own towel, as the hospital ones are usually rough, and after major surgery you need baby soft towels.  He! he! just take everything you need and load hubbie up with it all when he takes you home.

My Hospital in Kings Lynn discharges at the weekend, I went in on Good Friday, and came out Saturday.  Our hospital is desperate for the bed, so they have a discharge at weekends policy.   They were even operating on Easter Sunday!

If you need to know what your hospital does contact PALS, their email will be on your hospital webstie.  They are extremely helpful.

Take care

Between the towel, nightie, dressing gown, slippers, clothes and toiletries they are asking me to bring, and considering how many days I will be spending there, I don't see how this is going to fit in a small overnight suitcase.

I took a small bag in with me with dressing gown, slippers, some toiletry items, book, magazines and my hospital paperwork. The rest was meant to follow that night but i never saw my Dad until the following evening following the confusion after my op.He did bring in a small case and a small bag of food but once the case was unpacked he took it home again.Hospitals don't always like cases by the bed and you bedside locker isn't big.On the Thurs he took some things back home knowing that i was hoping to go home Fri.I wore the clothes home that i wore in.I felt that i was really organised and didn't end up with that much to bring home when i finally got discharged.I didn't use half the things i took in.

Hi Atropuppy

My weekend case luckily has a top that extends so you can get about 2" of higher room.  It is quite an art packing it all in.  I took a beach bag as well for the towel and dresssing gown.  My hubby took my case home with him when I unpacked it, (just had time before they whipped me down to theatre!  That's the way I like it!)  as there is nowhere to put the case.  Just remind your hubby to bring it back when you are going home.  Don't worry it all works out very well.

Small suitcase with additional bag is a great idea

Hi Astropuppy

Don't forget the oil of peppermint and lip balm, he! he! I think that just about covers it.

lip balm and small bottle of water as i found the jugs were always being topped up and for first day i couldn't actually lift the jug to pour it into plastic cup and nurses were so busy i didn't want to bother them. Do not do what i did though and drink 5 jugs of water in the 12 hours after the op, it really buggered my bladder up and made it retain more than it was getting rid of when i wee'd so they put the catheter back in for another day and wouldn't let me go home until the bladder scan was showing less than 150ml left in my bladder after going. Drink enough but don't overdo it but you will be very thirsty after anesthetic
