Wanted some feedback from my fellow hippies. I have been slow to heal and still walk on crutches after 10 weeks. I can walk a bit around the house with no crutches but I have a pronounced limp. It feels as if the muscles surrounding the hip are very tight (maybe protecting something) and it hurts a little to walk on it. Does this slowly go away? Did you limp thru the pain to get it to heal?
Hi Jamie
I'm 12 weeks post op and have been without crutches since 5 weeks. But I'm still in pain and still walk with a limp. I thought this would get better after the op but unfortunately it hasnt. Everyone is different and there are some people with more positive outcomes. Hope you start to feel better soon x
Hi Jamie, seems like you are trying to rush it a bit. Are you in a rush to get back to work ?
We all hope to be that lucky person that gets a new hip and is right as rain by week 6; unfortunately that is very unusual and only happens to a very few people.
You have had a major operation, we all get better at different rates and if you are feeling pain, it's usually your body telling you to stop! NO PAIN NO GAIN is just an advertising campaign for macho gym users !!!
Each surgeon performs differently and his team have the best exercises for your condition; just don't skimp on those unless there is pain holding you back.
Relax, I'm sure it is all going well but there are many repairs your body is going through right now' let it do it's work.
7 weeks post THR and I am trying to avoid limping. I can walk a few steps around the home woithout limping but rather than limp I will use a stick or a crutch and try to walk upright, walk slowly and take even steps. I worry that limping will be damaging other parts of my body.
hi Jamie,
have you seen your surgeon for follow up visit? is everything OK?
do you have physical therapy?
which hip is it?are you full weight bearing on both hips?
so sorry to hear this though....
big warm hug

Hi Jamie, I am 8 weeks post opp and I am still walking like a penguin, when I have no crutches, or stick ,Which I am trying not to use at all, because of the pain in my arm, which I assume gas been caused from the crutches.
Like you I hope this Limp starts to straighten up.
wish you well
That is my worry too, that walking on it will affect my back, etc. Thanks for the feedback.
I have seen my surgeon and everything from the THR seems fine. My suspician is it is more muscle related due to two years of prior issues before the operation. I had both hips done at the same time. I can weight bear on the right and it actually recovered rapidly. The left hip is taking more time.
I also started to have back pain near the shoulder blades from the crutches. I try hard not to use my arms to lift my body. It took slowing down to accomplish that! Good luck to you too!
Hi Jamie,
That is good that everything THR wise good - Oh dear, our poor body and the muscles - you had 2 blows to your system, and simultaneously at that !
Question (sorry) - How about getting a rollator? you know, 4 wheeled walker with a seat thingy - I didn't have crutches but rollator as they thought that would be better since I live alone in small / tiny bungalow and I was in terrible physical shape as well....
there won't be any pressure on your arms or shoulders or armpits - maybe wrists, but that was because I was hanging on for dear life in the beginning-
I have exactly the opposite situation, Jamie. Left is 90% healed and right still has a bad limp. Saw my physio yesterday who also said it was the buttock muscles that are tight. He did some dry needling and suggested I stretch the glutes 3x per day for 30 seconds each. This is only day one but I'm so hopeful
That's great news! Wondering, do you feel that everything in your right hip area has healed? Or do you think there is still some healing to go? For me I can tell my left hip still has some healing left. Perhaps that healing has to be completed before all the muscles can loosen up.
Hi jamie,
I'm 9 weeks, I have walked without my stick but there is still some limping, so I'm using my stick outside again. I see the consultant on 3rd of May. I am due back to work in May, I want this limping stopped. Not everyone heals early, it can take time. If you have pain, take some basic painkillers so you don't mask anything and rest up, for a day or two and see if it's any better.
the wonders of our body, right ? I am so confused at times - right hip was done March 2015 and left one September 2015 - left hip seems to be doing fine but then right hip started to ache and act up - Okay, now apparently have Trochanteric bursitis in right hip and also in left hip -
so I am limping and with this, on which side do I hold the cane????
Good question. When I go for walks I take both crutches. Around the house I use 1 crutch, but when I'm in my bedroom I do the penguin walk. Especially when going to the loo at night because I'm so aware of the sounds the crutch makes.
That's me today. Went to the physio on Thursday, then a long walk (for me) yesterday and at the end of it the crock hip was very sore. So today I'm having a duvet day.
I have some niggles today, so all I have done today, apart from eat is pickle some eggs lol
