Hi all I've had bone on bone osteoarthritis for years but up until now I've been considered too young to have the replacements done... long story short, I've been having stem cell treatment which was amazing until I ended up with a staph infection that pretty much annihilated my final vestiges of cartilage in my right hip and my surgeon has now agreed to replace both hips and I'm the waiting list 😀
My question is ... I've opted for a double hip replacement because I have twins who are 1 and a 4 year old so I'm thinking one recovery and surgery is better for me. I recovered well (back at work in 2 weeks) from the two joint clean out surgeries I had from the bone infection. Or am I being too ambitious? Would I be better doing them one at a time? I'm now 44 and have just lost 12 kg with the infection, so I'm fighting fit!
Hi susie some people have said they have had both hips done together I’ve had metal on metal done on my right hip and don’t think I could have taken the pain of both together I’m 5 weeks post surgery now and still in pain although have cut my pain medicine down on saying that some people get over it very quickly but you won’t be able to mo e around much at first but if you think you can stand it have both together I don’t think I’ll have my left hip done but hope all goes well whatever you decide good luck I’m sure your be fine
My first hip replacement was bone on bone and I had a metal plate inserted due to spurring. If you have family support (husband, parents, siblings, friends) and your surgeon is happy to do two at once then go for it. You wont be able to move around much for quite a few months so will need a lot of help. You are young and say you are fit so go with the advice of your surgeon.
All the best and let us know your decision so we can support you.
Suzie. Sorry for all your problems . Well your surgeon says it's ok but he doesn't have to take care of your children. I had one done 4 weeks ago I have had some complications so it has taken me a while to get this behind me. There is no way I could have taken care of three children. If they put you in a rehab for a while and you have lots and lots of help because you can't do much in the beginning then go for it. I know some so get both done at the same time but I doubt they have two twins and a 1 year old. Whatever you do I wish you the best of luck. But be sure even if you get one done have lots and lots of help.
