Does the Pred effect anyone's hair as it seems my hair has gone very dry it's a mess. Also my skin has got really dry. Any ideas on this one please.
As I've mentioned before my hair and nails grow faster. My hairdresser
can't believe that I have to come in about every 2 and a half weeks
when I used to go about 3-4 weeks before feeling like I needed my
hair trimmed. Nails have to be cut about every two weeks.
Don't notice any dryness of hair.. Skin has always been on the dry side
but then I'm an "old lady" it happens
Yes. My hair is very dry and thin. My skin is not too bad but I apply moisturiser daily on my body and it helps. I buy it from a well known store normally known for its underwear amongst other clothing. I buy the cheapest variety and apply it daily. I use another moisturiser on my feet which can be obtained on prescription or over the counter free under the minor ailments at the pharmacy. I am in the UK.
My nails are also growing at a rate I haven't experienced before and are stronger than they've been in the past.
Hi Jackie,
Double Base was recommended to me awhile back on this sire. If you are in US you can order it from Amazon and in the UK I'm not sure but I think they sell it in drug stores or whatever you call that kind of store. 😀
Besides that I use Argan oil. I put a couple of pumps of each into the palm of my hand and rub it on my arms and legs. What's left over on my hands I use on my face. It seems to absorb after a couple minutes and is not greasy. It has really helped the dry skin caused from pred. The hair problem I solved by wearing a wig and I have really grown to like them.
i found them on line. They are a bit pricey but well worth it. The synthetic are better- easier to care for and look quite natural.
My nails are growing faster and are still strong. My hair is growing faster, and went very thing when my health first began to decline. Acupuncurist told me to try nettle tea for hair. (drinking it) I will give it a go.
Seems like my hair is falling out. Started from one day to the next last October. Am now ingesting 5000 mcg of Biotin twice a day and also using Nioxin products to wash and condition hair. Supposedly the Biotin helps both hair and skin, the Nioxin helps hair. Seems like the fallout has slowed down, but who knows? I have not seen a dermatologist about it. It was the rheumy who told me about the Biotin.
Can't tell whether the hair loss was due to life stress or being on Prednisone for close to 2 years. Supposedly it is one of the side effects. Or maybe just aging. I am 70 this year. I take HRT, so it can't be that hormone loss. Skin is dry, but I moisturize daily tocompensate. I use an inexpensive, non branded store stuff that is also fragrance free. Seems to work on the skin.
My hair turned very dry and coarse & totally unmanageable. A friend gave me some Wen, cleanser/conditioner to try & it helped a lot, so I ordered some online. Another friend gave me some Argan oil, which also adds some nice moisture. Between the two products, I can at least keep my hair under control. The only good side effect of the prednisone that I've noticed is that my nails are much stronger and grow faster. I'll take my victories where I can get them!
My hair was like a haystack. I tried everything including Argan oil. I have now had it cut pretty short, it has also gone curly, several people have said how nice it looks and how funcky!
I've tried argon oil it helps a bit I think maybe some of the answer is for now is to stop having highlights.
I know the feeling mine has gone wild going to have a good cut and stop having highlights as they dry it out.
I spent a fortune trying to find something to improve the quality. My hairdresser said 'Those steriods have really f**ked up your hair'.
Hi Jackie,
yes I have been on pred for 4 years now and although I have very thick hair, it's become Sassoon dry. Also my skin is flakey so I have to moisturise all the time. My lips are constantly dry so I keep the lip balm companies in business 😀
Some people get curly hair, some people get straight hair and some people find it goes frizzy and dry like a brillo pad! Mine did that with one sort of pred and pretty much stopped growing, with another sort it is back to normal and even the curls have nearly gone but it is shoulder length now.
Diprobase and Double base can be prescribed in the UK if you have a nice GP - they are used for eczema. They're good - not greasy and no perfumes. Avoid using soap or any cleanser that foams if you have dry skin - it can often make it far worse - and there are products from that range that can be used to cleanse. Not that we get particularly dirty these days and plain water will do what you need really.
I havent notced the nails, mine hae always been fast growing and strong, but my hair has got very thin and dry. I found that half (pulled through a cap) dying it helped bulk it up and I use lots of conditioners and the like. Now I'm down to 7mgs I can see regrowth, so here's hoping!
Skin is dry. I always cream twice a day, you need to keep it in as good condition as possible, to help prevent tears, which could lead to ulceration.
Who was it who said, getting old was only for the brave? throw in PMR!
Pharmacy in the UkK
Sorry don't have a problem with the hair - haven't got any but I do find my skin is very dry since starting Mr Fred and use doublebase.
Twice a day is a good idea. If you use the Doublebase try it mixed with a little Argan oil. It applies more smoothly and spreads better. I also use the Argan on my hair at night. It also seems to absorb but my hair is a mess and I don't believe there is anything that will help at this point.
I've found that experimentation with shampoos made a big difference - some were hopeless and others were much better. Aussie MiracleMoist or whatever it is called was particularly good. And a good cut - if there is enough to cut that is, mine stopped growing!
Hi Jackie. I had the same probs with ahir & skin. I had my hair cut really short & just used leave in conditioners & its fine now. My skin I used the oils they recommend for scars etc & used it morning & night & that does help.
