Enlarged Prostate plus UTI

Long story short...At the beginning of the month has UTI....then after it cleared still had urinating issues...The doctors say the uti was caused by my enlarged prostate blocking the urethra...so they gave me Bactrim....it went away....but still the issue of having problems peeing...so they had to put a catheter in me...July 2...first time...then a week later my doc removed catheter but when i went home i still could not pee...so i had to go to emergency again on July 10 and they re installed the cath....I have been taking terazosin and now they just added Finasteride/Proscar to try and reduce the size of my prostate...now into day 3 and do notice a better flow coming into my leg and night bags..Im going to see a Urologist next monday and he might or might not take it out. This whole thing has been very depressing and i also feel sorry for my wife who hears me moan and complain about my condition..having to change bags at night...making sure im doing it the right way....one more thing...reading all over the internet that you are supposed to clean the bags with White wine vinegar and water but the nurse today said that is not necessary....just run water through it...she said they are  made to not have to wash....Agree????

I recently experienced having a Foley catheter after hip replacement surgery. I was on Alfuzosin (Uraxatrol) for BPH before the surgery.  I had to go to the ER three times to keep having the catheter put in.

It is finally out and I’m now successfully doing self-cathing.

It was daunting at first, but it is actually not that big a deal. I got a lot of support and encouragement from this site.

I was advised by the ER nurse to use vinegar and water to clean the bags.

Good luck - keep us posted

I had the TURP procedure done 3 weeks ago and it’s chsnged my life, I pee like a racehorse now, only problem is they say afterwards you never  Ejaculate Again, it flows backwards into your bladder but you do have orgasm , I haven’t had sex yet so I don’t know for sure but I have woke up with an erection and precum so that’s s good sign I think ?

Good luck with your situation my friend.

I had the Rezum procedure done in Nov 2017. Had the cath in for ~11 days and never cleaned the bag and wasn't told to clean it. Make sure you drink lots of fluid. I was drinking nearly 100 ounces/day.

Keep up your spirits.

Finding the right urologist will solve all your issues.

I have enlarged prostate............9 years ago diagnosed... I self catheterize 5/6 times a day........if you have to go down this path it is no big deal... I find it easy and I treat it like just going to the toilet... it has never bothered me and I go on holidays, cruises and have never had a problem... Main priority is to make sure  your parts are wiped with antiseptic wipes to avoid UTI's....  I  would try it, if your urologist  goes along with it....even if it is only  temporary.

Best of luck

Do not panic if first couple of orgasms are poor or even sting a bit.  My first two post-Holep at 8 week mark were almost insensate, but there was improvement over time and quite acceptable now.  My earlier posts gave the search term to find an official study on this, that showed my experience is common at first.  They really should mention the retro thing beforehand, just so you know, and should also mention the aforementioned too but of course don't as you might then not have the op.  Sleeping through the night without getting up to pee is pretty handy, I find, as is the fast peeing.

Jack,

I would suggest that you learn to self cath (CIC) ASAP while things are sorted out.

It is so much more independent, comfortable and natural than having a Foley indwelling.

I resisted learning to CIC for 6 weeks and really regretted it.  The difference is night and day.  It take s 10 minutes to learn and becomes routine fairly quickly - even though it's a routine you'd rather not have to perform!

Good luck!
