Estrogel - headaches and dizziness

Good morning ladies!

I have been taking the estrogel gel for a month now and yes you were quite right those of you that advised me to stick with it!  The dreadful anxiety, hot flushes insomnia and depression did lift and I almost felt human again!  Now almost a month later  and for the last few days I have had a strange headache with dizziness!  Should I just persevere - really can't imagine going back into the dark tunnel again?  Thank you! Ooh should mention that I have also been prescribed Utrogestan but only on a quarterly basis - ie. GP has suggested I only need to have a period every three months??x

Im on a gel and also feel better but have had the dizznesss and headache I've not been on it long I don't get periods anymore as I've had hysterectomy

Ah thanks Caroline - if you don't mind me asking have you been using the gel for a while or just recently?

Hello kitten. It could be that your new symptoms are not related to your HRT I suppose. Personally I would persevere and see how you feel because it's very easy to put every ache, pain and niggle down to something new we've been prescribed......I'm guilty of that.

Hi Matron - thanks yes would agree with you but this is what happened when I was prescribed HRT before - patches!  Am wondering if the gel has taken a while to reach a certain level at which is triggers headaches and dizziness. Am therefore uncertain if I am needing less or more??!  It takes an age to see my GP - bugger it was all going so well!!!

No I only been using it two weeks also I've had quessy smotach with it too

Yes its probably is the hrt just give it time see how you get on with it that's what I'm doing

Hi I was wondering when you started the Utrogestan as it may be this causing your symptoms?

Hi Tracy - thank you - no, have not yet started the Utrogestan as only going to take it every three months - had a big reaction to it before which is why I think GP is suggesting this timeframe!

Aha yes me too - yuk!  However, so worth it as I really was in a very strange place during the last few months of last year - not wanting to wake up - not that I wanted to take my life but felt that every day was a supreme battle with anxiety and this awful doom and gloom!  I am a counsellor and so was really struggling to 'give' to anyone else as  felt I was going off my trolley!  Feel heaps better but as I said tend to be prone to migraine type headaches and of course if your read the contraindications it is one of the things that is highlighted - will persevere though Caroline.

That's truex

Oh right, I understand now. What a pain then. Is there a nurse at your surgery such as a Nurse Practitioner who deals with HRT and menopause? A lot are qualified to deal with these things and they usually have 15 minute appointments so you don't feel rushed.

Its probably for the best periods are no fun. Since you haven't started it yet it helps its not in the mix. It may settle over time I guess I think I would go back to the Dr after a fair trial, as it may not suit you. Theirs other options though, I hope it passes though :-)

Thats what I do give it 3 months

Thank you for replying Tracy - am going to give it 3 months maybe the odd migraine here and there is a small price to pay - the alternative just doesn't bear thinking about!

Let me know how you get on Caroline - thank you!x

I found my migraines were caused both by low testosterone (relative to my estrogen supplement) or/and when taking progesterone.  Progesterone also caused stomach problems and very low mood for me.

I ended up having a hysterectomy so I could use estrogen without having to have the progesterone.

I keep my testosterone topped up, that stops any hint of a migraine now.

I wish Matron - perhaps I could suggest it is something the surgery could introduce!? Thank you for replying - this forum is fab!x

Yes its a small price to pay that's what I'm doing give it 3 mths then go back to the doctors to see how got on

Hi Spotty - that's a really good point - am quite tall and remember reading years ago that testosterone levels are higher in taller women.  The challenge is getting hold of it - it is not prescribed for women in the UK?  Where are you based? Thank youx
