After my HoLEP Surgery I called the doctors office to see when I could hit the weights for upper body and elliptical for cardio. I was told 2 weeks so I went to the weight room and did a lot of reps with substantial weights. I was doing good with my HoLEP till then. My question is how long should I have waited? Controlling urine flow has been a big problem since that exercise session.
When to resume exercise should have been included with your discharge instructions. When I had a bladder tumor removed, the doctor said I could resume exercise a week after the last sign of blood in my urine. That turned out to be a little over 2 weeks. Sounds like you overdid it.
I had another procedure (not HoLEP). I took a spinning class 4 weeks after my surgery (less invasive than HoLEP). My plan was to do 30 min of the hour class. I left after 30 minutes and barely got back to the locker room before I started urinating into the first thing I could grab - towel. OK, that 's the bad news. It got better from there. Take it easy for a week. Walk. Then if things are improving, try to do a few minutes of weights and or elliptical rather than your normal routines. It's been over a year since the surgery and I don't have any major problems on the control front. Good luck.
Lewis. Just read a article on the HOLEP surgery. They said that with any prostate surgery you should give your body from 4 to 6 weeks because they consider that major surgery. Give your self some time to heal. Good Luck Ken
I too routinely go the gym and that’s a concern of mine since I will have Holep June 6.
I’m counting on a 2 week rest then slowly going back.
How are you doing?
I did not get exercise info in my discharge papers and I went to the gym two weeks after surgery. That was a big mistake on the MD's part. Bleeding immediately started after the workout. I was doing great until I went to the gym.
Thanks
Thanks Phil, I don't consider myself to be doing very good due to going back to the gym too soon.
Phil,
Please do no go back to the gym after two week because that is what messed me up. Take at least four if not six weeks. Every one is different and we heal at different rates. Here is a link to some information on pelvic floor, or kegel, exercises for HoLEP. I wish someone had provided me with the link before the surgery.. If you do these exercises as advised, the risk or urinary incontinence after surgery is low, and if it does occur it normally resolves completely within a few months (often within a few days). SEE http://www.oklahomaholep.com/kegel-exercises/  on how to do the exercise.
Phil, At this point I would not consider going to the gym before 6 weeks of rest.
Based on Lewis' experience, I would recommend you discuss your exercise routines with the doctor and write down his response (or have your wife/partner listen also.) Depending on the anesthesia used, you may not remember what he tells you in recovery. Good luck.
I’m sorry to hear.
Are you still bleeding ?
Four days after the Holep were you able to see a movie or go to a friends house?
I hope you feel better asap.
Which procedure did you have?
I’m asking because I still have time to have a Button Turp in leu of a Holep.
Ken, would you choose a Holep over a Button Turp, assuming the surgeon is equally competent in both procedures?
Good points, thanks Lee.
Thanks Phil, No bleeding today 5 weeks and 3 days since surgery and non since I exercised. That stopped the first week but at the end of two weeks when I went to the gym it started up again but quickly stopped. I was able to go the movies the second week. My main problem is having to void way to often and an almost constant need to go with the exception of night time when I sleep with the aid of Benadryl. This was not a real problem two weeks after surgery. Sometimes there is almost no control but it is getting slightly better I think. There are meds which help some people but I don't tolerate them very well. I am getting on the elliptical for cardio but no heavy lifting as of today.
Look up the Kegal Exercise for prostate surgery. It is to be used before and after surgery and people who practice it seem to do better concerning frequency.
Phil....First of all I would not have either or any procedure that cut's away at the prostate. That is why I had a UROLIFT over 3 years ago and my prostate is still wide open. My prostate was the size of a large lemon. My urologist could not get the scope through my prostate. He does all kinds of procedure but he is not only a Urologist he is also a fertility doctor. He like to start with the lease evasive procedure. He just started doing UROLIIFT and he told me about it. I told him that I was not a fan of retro and would not have anything that would cause it. I was his 20 patient and mine has done well I had 4 clips put in and off med and no side effects. Him and his partner have done hundreds and only had to redo a few. Just added a couple of more clips. That is what I picked. Every man has to make his own choice and has to deal with any side effects that come up. I hope you guys that have picked other procedure have made the right choice for you. Take it easy and don't rush into anything Ken
Phil I forgot to say that my Urologist do not do many TURP's They feel it is the last resort. My doctor only did 3 last year. After trying something else Ken
Lewis, knowing what you do now, would you choose another procedure?
Button Turp, GL, ?
My prostate is ~70 grams and have 6 small bladder stones.
After a cystoscopy I was told due the size and median lobe I’m not a candidate for Urolift.
Also I have 6 bladder stones.
Based on this information, which would you choose between Holep, GL or Button Turp?
