I wondered whether others on this site have ever taken their BP after a brisk walk, something we are told not to do. I assume they tell us not to do it as it will make the BP rise although settle back to normal afterwards. I find it goes the other way and drops off the scale. It comes back to normal of course. I'm just curious. We are told not to take the BP after drinking a cup of hot tea or coffee too and I find that that does make the pressure rise.
MIne is usually much lower after being out walking but I wait about ten minutes after getting home before taking it.
When I went to cardio rehab it was lower at the end of the session than before it but my heart rate was up quite a bit.
Haven't tried taking it after a walk but my BP is certainly up after each gym session!!! It's GP referral and I've only been going for a few weeks so perhaps I've got to give it longer to work....if it's going to that is! I'll try taking it after a walk and let you know - bit dark to go now though at approaching midnight!
Interesting point Jane. I now walk, briskly, for at least 30mins every day......along with my normal walking, gardening etc but have never taken bp afterwards as my GP told me that you have to have been rested for a while to get a true reading. Might scare myself if I took my bp immediately after a half hour brisk walk!
Hi guys its officially the first day of winter, lets keep up the good work 30 mins walk a day, amazing how good you will feel, the bottom number should stay pretty much the same when we do a session, the top is the only number that rises, after 10 mins rest, you will be pleasantly suprised at your reading...
I know mine always drops like a stone after a brisk walk, but a walk always makes me feel really good. If the weather is awful and the dog is pining to get out it really freshens me up. Never really noticed what the heart rate does though Derek. interesting Mrs O that your is UP.
Try taking it Fisherman just after a walk. it's good to see the numbers even if they are not recorded
Everyones BP goes up during exertion so it is probably not anything to worry about. I wonder how various sports affects the participants.
Oh dear ......I got locked out trying to send this post!!! Had to re-set password etc. BP now high! ha ha. Anyway, I have been for a very brisk walk earlier tonight and took my readings as soon as I returned. They were 119/88 and pulse 81. Can you decipher these readings for me please?! Do they appear OK after a pretty fast paced walk?
Be like Felix and keep on walking. Walking is obviously better that pills.
Derek you are going to think I am a real dimwit (an element of truth there) but who is Felix?! Sorry to have to ask!
I'd say they were fine, what are yours normally, much higher I presume? I'm guessing that if you took the BP ten mins or so later they would have reverted to a more usual readin.
I started this post out of curiosity as we are told always not to take readings after exercise and I wondered what exercise would do - the assumption being that it would rise. In fact the opposite seems to be true.
Felix was a cartoon cat in pre Disney days. You can see him on Youtube. Wikipedia has the full story. His films reflected life and history in the 20's and 30's.
One of the films was Felix Kept on Walking.
You gotta be really old to remember him. I had a projector and a lot of of od films when I was a kid.
No Jane, I don't think "the opposite is true". A Dr told me a couple of days ago that it is perfectly normal for exercise to increase BP and it can take a while to come down depending on the person and how used they are to exercise. Perhaps in your case you have done so much walking for a long time, hence a fast return to norma, which is great.
Well 'UP'is what I would have expected but found not to be the case. Interesting though. I don't take any real notice of it and would never record it as it isn't stable: it soon goes back to normal.
Thanks Derek. I will look Felix up on YouTube. Its my weekly visit to my mothers today so I will ask her about Felix. She can't remember what she does minute by minute but has great recall on her youth during the 20's and 30's. Yes, walking seems beneficial. It has to be brisk though as a stroll does not "cut the mustard" as they say!
There is more to this walking lark than meets the eye. My wife is type 2 diabetic and Sunday night we "indulged" in a carvery at a local restaurant. She had some mash potatoes, a big no-no if you are diabetic. She took her BG readings an hour after eating and they were very high. In a state of semi panic she grabbed her coat and went for a brisk 30 minute walk (I stayed at home with the cat!) When she re did her readings the blood glucose had returned to normal.....well normal for her that is.
It seems walking is a miracle drug!!
I did randomly. I was suffering high blood pressure as high as 163/100 and pulse as high as 115 at one point, so decided to exercise and change my diet now i have it somewhat under control averaging 130/75 and average pulse of 85. But during the first few days of exercising with high blood pressure i took mine after doing a high intensity work out and it read 178/106 and pulse 119 thought i was going to have a heart attack from freaking out after so i don't recommend checking it lol
I do wonder why mine is so low after a walk. As low as 100/58 or even lower [systolic anyway]. However it rises back to a normal level in half an hour or so. I only tried it to see why you shouldn't do it !!
Hi there so are you taking medication for your blood pressure?
