Feels like swelling under ribs

Hi everyone. i have been dealing with off and on gb pain for about 3 years. i was diagnosed with sludge and gravel stones. I decided not to have it removed at that time because it settled down and i wanted to wait and see if it happened again. It has flared up a few times since then. Usually not excruciating pain, just moderate, some nausea and flushing but never run a fever. it will usually last a few days and then may not bother me for months. i did have another ultrasound about a year ago that didn’t show any stones. i have decided to have it removed now because this past weekend it started aching again and then felt like it was swelling. i figure it is time. Has anyone else experiences the swelling feeling. It has settled down now. still aching. i have appoint with surgeon in a couple of weeks. Thanks!

Try OMEPRAZOLE over the counter, it worked with me. check if you have a hiatal hernia.

Yes feels like the rib cage is under tension, also stitch like feeling where the gallbladder is and deep, dull pain under right shoulder blade.

good description of how it feels. it felt like i couldn't sit up straight because my ribs on the right side were pushing down on something and then yes i will get a sharper type pain sometimes too.

Yep. It feels like someone has wedged a tennis ball under my ribs.

thanks matt. i am so glad im not alone on this one. i don't see a lot of people talk about it. The doctor's office called and i have a consult with him on monday.

That is when the gall bladder is suffering inflamation......... That happened to me but I got a prescription for ursodeoxycholic acid from my gastric surgeon & then my GP had to repeat that script. In six months 4 stones had gone and the 17mm on is now 10mm. I do not have any symptoms as of now. It may well become dangerous when a gall bladder is enlarged when it can be 'felt' because an eminent Oncologist said he could feel my gall bladder and he said he found that interesting because he has never been able to feel anyone's gall bladder before mine!

My symptoms at that time were horrendous with vomiting that started late evening after my evening meal & it went on till the early hours....... The vomiting was very hard to cope with but the ursodeoxycholic acid dissolved the stones I had bar one. He said he would be pleased to re do any future ursodeoxcholic acid script I needed if I requested it. Before 'the knife' I would have thought it is well worth researching the URSO because it works but only apparently for cholesterol type stones.

thank you mick. hopefully the doc will have some answers for me

hi matt. does the swelling come and go for you? what other symptoms do you have? thanks

Hi 2chr, Other symptoms are nausea pretty much 24//7, light coloured stools, dark urine, dizziness, pain between my shoulder blades, fatigue, feel like i've got the flu and feel like someone has kicked me in my right ribs.

Yes the swelling feeling comes and goes, but i have constant discomfort in the same area.

You?

i have had the light colored stools in the past but not recently. other than that its just the annoying discomfort and that swelling feeling that happened recently. i could deal with the off and on symptoms but i'm afraid it might rupture or end up in some emergency situation. have you had any itchy skin?

You are welcome.... Incidentally =not all doctors know about the ursodeoxycholic acid treatment to dissolve gall stones of type. All my GP's refused to write a script for that treatment and the excuse was that it 'might not work' which was patent rubbish in my case because it is now more than two years since my gall bladder was very swollen and inflamed. The surgeon is a THE leading gastro surgeon in Nottingham and he confirmed that yes usodeoxycholic acid will dissolve gall stones but it is a horrible way of doing it...... Not so for me I told him in a letter and he said in reply that he was very pleased that in my case it suited me admirably....... I feel positive that many a gall bladder has been removed quite unnecessarily which seems a shame. I feel strongly also that it boils down to education. I read an internet article by a USA specialist gastric surgeon who sated that few good doctors knew about acid dissolution of gall stones.

I friend of mine LAST WEEK had 'his' gall stones 'flushed' out of his gall bladder because his heart was not up to coping with an operation as is the norm........ I have never seen that item discussed or the urso treatment either = secret service?

Dark urine is another symptom I have. Pale stools always.

Yes, lots in my legs and feet.

2chr, i was referred for surgery 18 months ago after fighting and complaining of my symptoms for well over a year. Waited 3 months to see surgery team and after months of fumbles i was referred back to the gastro, waited over 6 months, was seen again in Oct 2018, had HIDA scan and was seen again and told i would be seen again within 3 months! Well guess what......... that was nearly 6 months ago!!! I've heard nothing!

I take it you're not in the UK?

oh wow. Thats terrible you are having to wait so long to get surgery! No, I am not in the UK. Thanks for the response. Please keep me updated on how you do. i will try to update after i see the surgeon tomorrow

Yes, please keep us updated.

2chr, i'm not having surgery even though i had an ultrasound that showed a shadow in my gallbladder and a thickened wall. That was 18 + months ago.

I don't think that since being here i've seen one single person have a good time with the NHS. IT'S CRAP!

Well no surgery until i turn yellow, start vomiting bile or my gallbladder bursts that is.

went to the surgeon yesterday. it was pretty straight forward. i told him what it felt like and he said we will take it out. so july 9th is the day

Thats great news 2chr 👍

Really glad for you and so glad you're not here in the UK!

Keep us posted please 😊

So why are you so intent on getting your gall bladder removed when you may well be able to achieve no stones in your gall bladder provided they are cholesteroil type stones by dissolving them with ursodioxycholic acid treatment? All the information is there on the internet if your particular surgeon is not fully aware of the situation.......

Why should I bother to put this anywhere now that I have a gall bladder that does not have symptomatic stones in it? Because I must care that there are many who have their gall bladder removed that was totally unnecessary... This however is how things transpire because believe it or not there are some people who firmly believe theis earth of ours is absolutely flat!
