First few days

THR on Wednesday out Friday walked round the boundary with crutches watching my cricket team, just 1 lap, stiff today but so far so good.

Amazing! Superman!

Take care in the early days. One member overdid it and ended up having to go back to square one - it set him back by a couple of weeks.  It is much better to do two shorter walks than one long one.

See how you feel tomorrow and if you have any new aches or stiffness then take it easy.  I'm glad you felt so good but take care, it isn't a race but a process.

For the 1st week I could hardly move without pain ! Then gradually felt pain free to walk with one crutch it's  23 days in now and have just been to supermarket for the first time since op with my husband so no trolley pushing involved and i am feeling like I have been run over by a bus !!!!!

I think once you've done the first supermarket run and got up from under that bus it's all on the up from there on in! Did supermarket at 20 days,  am now 24 days on and this morning hung the washing out. We're all different and progress at different speeds. Slow and steady For me - one reasonable effort a day, walking little and often and lots of rest inbetween

Well done you....but do be careful and pace yourself.

I'm a volunteer and I'm much better at telling people to pace themselves than doing it myself

No doubt about it exercise  {the right kind} is the best thing for you.

My first one was 4 years ago and cant remember exactly when I was doing what but it wasnt long

This time was completely different

Four  weeks into my recovery I was doing one of the NHS exercises and heard a crack.  They  took me into hospital, x rayed it and told me I had fractured my great trochanter bone?? They couldnt do anything about it, it would heal itself, but would take a long time.  6 months on from THR I'm still on 2 crutches

Still feeling a little battered at the moment but onwards and upwards eh?

Its so good to speak to other people who understand how you feel love this forum !!

Just out of curiosity are still on 2 crutches or one ??

Hi. Am on two mostly as instructed due to uncemented ceramic on ceramic but I find myself increasingly only using one round the house as it's impossible to manouevre otherwise if carrying anything at all -especially using a grabber. I can walk quite comfortably on one if I lean enough on the left crutch to take the weight off the operated right hand side but wouldn't go outside without two crutches as I'm scared of being unbalanced or stumbling. Good luck to you and keep posting.

Cricket...ok so i know you are in England.   One word of caution, go slow!  We have all been thru the very good first few weeks and then boum...pain in the groin area, tendon pain etc...good luck and good continuation..

Hi, I was also out of hosp in a very short time, and am walking with 2 crutches outside and one inside 7 days post op.  Feel better and less stiff if i walk slowly and regularly, the worse time is at night when i run out of painkillers and can't sleep, dread going to bed and managed 2 beds and 2 chairs last night!!

I have found that putting a pillow under my knees at night really helps !

U got got the idea...take it one day at a time.

doesnt it feel great to finally get outside!

Be very careful don't over do it

Hi fredrunner.

All i can say is to take it easy it's early days, if you over do thing you may have to go and have it done again, am sure you dont want that.

Am in my 14th weeks and i stil take one crutch with me when am out walking, I still just do a little at a time.

Good Luck!

Hi Carmen.. With 14 weeks out u can understand the necessity to take it slow.. No one wants to go in for a redo. It's a real catch 22 to try to stay in shape when muscles r wasting away. Keep them strong with doing exercises given by the PT when UR ready to move foreword. Exercises laying down for Legs & the best is rear squeezes keeping the core muscles strong.

LET ME KNOW HOW U R DOING.

HOPE confused

Thanks hope4cure, am doing the best i can with the Exercises i was only given a boox with the Exercises that i have to do, but i was shown how to do the when i was in Hospital.

You are right it's a catch 22 everyone recovery is different.

Hi Carmen

You are lucky  LOL I was given a page with exercises on both sides

Admittedly I was told how to do them in hospital.

Not that it did me any good after my 2nd THR

Never mind.

Everyone as you say heals at a different rate

Eileen

He Carmen UR going thru the thick of it. It does take a toll on our spirits. Keep pushing thru recovery. Down time is a struggle. I find movies I- books, & Many animations on my surgery, recovery, &exercises helped encourage me to just take one cotton picken day at a time.

Any hobies drawing writing etc?

CHEERSlol

I think everybody was given the same two pages of exercises.  I did too.   You just have to keep doing them, daily.  I never stopped doing mine for my right THR of last year and i probably will never stop, it only takes a few minutes and can only do me good.
