last night I managed to sleep from 1.00 a.m. until 7.00 a.m.!!! I put a pillow under by legs, on the back of my knees to be precise and I managed to sleep on my back...I feel a different person today! I cannot sleep on the operated side: the cut is still hurting. I cannot sleep on the unoperated side: the new hip is hurting.
Also I have odd bruises appearing on the operated leg at random...is ithis "normal"???
I'm really pleased to hear you've had a good nights sleep. It makes all the difference!
I think I had my surgery the day after you and I also have random bruises appearing on my operated leg, particularly around the knee. I had my staples out today and the nurse told me it's to be expected.
Well done. As I said in earlier post, I have never been able to sleep on my back. i might go off for a couple of hours when I am totally deadbeat. Last night I watched 3 episodes of House of Cards on my iPad between midnight and 3.30 and then went off for a couple of hours. Am sure problem will be resolved in nest week or so when I am able to return to the foetal position.
Hi ella ... cool ...you might prefer to sleep on your back at some point, who knows? bruises and tenderness is normal and will pop up now and again, even at 13 weeks post-op ... take care and big hug ----
Hi Ella, so pleased you've had a good night sleep dare I say I've 6 hours for the past 2 nights and I feel so different and more alive. I have just done a 0.5 mile walk so I'm now going to put my feet up for a couple of hours.
My first assessment is on Thursday, I can't wait because I hope they are going to remove the plaster from the cut, so I can have a proper shower! I am strip washing at the moment, it takes ages and I don't feel clean...
Can you have a shower now? I don't have staples, bur stitches which are supposed to be reabsorbed...
Although I had staples they were covered in a waterproof 'skin like' dressing and I was advised that I could shower from day 1, which has been wonderful. I've even managed to wash my hair a few times, although I've needed to sit down afterwards.
Overall I'm doing really well thanks. My biggest issue has been swelling of my operated leg but it's a small price to pay for the pain relief I now have.
All the best for Thursday and have a blissful shower!
Gill! Half a mile...well done!!! I don't know how much I am able to walk, but I go around the garden and everywhere at home now...but I have to sit o lye down quite a bit.
I too found that a pillow under my knees helps in bed, but I'm still happy to get 2 hours at a time. But I'm trying to be patient!!
I finish my jabs on Thursday. Managed to draw blood for the first time yesterday. You'd think I'd get better with practice! Nooo!
I had my first one-crutch off road walk today to collect elderflowers for cordial. Kept my eyes on the ground the whole time! Keep setting myself new targets. So pleased its summertime.
Hope everyone's enjoying the sun, even though we have a cold wind in the Fens.
It's great when you can organise pillows to get some sleep! At 7 weeks I still don't sleep through the night. Mind you I didn't before the op! I spend some time on my unoperated side but then my knees start to ache and some time on my back.
I think the bruises come from tiny broken blood vessels not the ones the surgeon tied! - the blood works its way up into the muscles and the bruises form. The blood can travel down the leg hence you can also get bruises in the lower half of your leg and away from the wound - the anti coagulants make it easier for the blood to flow. It seems to be quite common. I've still got remnants of my bruises around the wound and just below it. Not sure how long they will last!
I am so happy that you have had a good nights sleep. I must be very lucky as I have slept reasonably well since day one. I tend to sleep in a semi recumbrant position on my back. If my leg is throbbing (which is often the case) I do find the pillow under the leg does seem to help along with a codine phosphrate tablet. Leg is particularly sore first thing in the morning. When I say sore, it is the muscles feeling very tight. The knee is very sore, even to touch and all down the right side of the leg. The more I exercise the better it gets through the day but then you suffer at night and first thing. I am able to go out and walk, slowly, with 2 sticks. I can use just one, but two is better for the recovery as all you do is put all the weight on the good leg instead of getting back to 'normal' walking! I too cannot sleep on either side yet but this will come. I too seem to have bruises coming up along the leg but knowing how much pulling and tugging that went on during the op - I am not particularly surprised! Staples coming out on Friday - fingers crossed. I have a shower and wash hair everyday. It makes you feel so much better. Darling son has brought me 4 curtains to shorten - just in case I was bored. nice .....
