it’s a idea where basically you get most of the info pre OP like what to expect / how to cope at home / equipment and OT / physio assessment pre OP and post OP with the idea that all that input means you’re in hospital shorter time and make a quicker recovery. think compared to yrs ago it’s great.much better pre OP input . with where I had my OP you get daily physio and OT input while you’re in hospital - teach you exercises to do long term and check your safe to go home. then that’s it unless for any reason they think yu need more input. you have to fit a criteria to go on it ie will do as you’re told re exercise . some places insist your bmi is below a certain figure as well. theory is creates a quicker recovery
Here in NZ we get another xray at 1 year and more down the track especially if younger
I had my 6 week check, i saw my surgeon who showed me my PO x- ray which were fine, he watched me walk with my stick, no problem, then asked me to walk without it and i was limping, he told me it was the muscles around my hip that need strenghening, and said that all takes time, he showed me some advanced exercises to do everyday and wants to see me again in 4 month.
Hi Julie
Well, as you can see from your replies, the 5 minute (if you’re lucky) review is pretty common.
For my first hip, I had my 6-week review at 8 weeks and was told that though the operation had been difficult the post-op x-ray looked fine and when would I like to book in for the other hip? Total time with the surgeon approx 5 minutes.
For my second hip, I had my 6-week review at 4 weeks and the surgeon had to pull out my stitches because no one else could remove them. This just meant that he wrapped the long end round a pair of forceps and pulled very firmly. Again, he had a quick look at the post-op x-ray, said everything went really well and that was it. Total time with the surgeon, approx 6 minutes (because of the stitch).
I found my 6 week check up in London was the same, a tick box exercise, not with my surgeon, and the dr ignored my concerns about a very hard lump like a tennis ball under the wound. I did have an xray but that was only because I had had a fall since the op. My physio thinks that was a haemotoma and has been trying to reduce it. eventualIy got an ultrasound weeks later and when the person did it she first of all told me it was haemotoma, then decided it was lymphoedma. I have been in severe pain through the pressure of this on my muscles and it hurts to walk without crutches to help, still at 16 weeks. I do walk and find the only way to do this is to walk first thing, having had my legs up when sleeping to move the swelling up my side, and during the walk gravity brings it back to the original wound area. I am trying to get a mri to check there is no infection as the area is hot too. The whole experience is not what I expected or was led to believe. I an 55 and was fit and active before surgery, and some days now I cannot even walk. My good hip has become painful too as it takes the brunt. I have pressure in my groin area too that when I try to urinate I get shooting nerve pain from my groin down my thigh.
Oh right, it’s all new stuff, I went to joint school last week, that’s a new scheme across the country, I suppose for the reasons you just stated, and why I have two pre ops I presume, no idea what each one is for? one tomorrow and one 25th, I shall find out tomorrow lol, the key is then, ask as many questions before because no one cares after
these forums have been excellent for me, enlightening! ‘the true stories’ lol
thank you ![]()
think that’s in a nutshell ! write your questions down as well helps a lot. good luck at your pre ops and OP date
yep 5 minutes seems to be a common thread . glad he got your stitch out . continuous sutures can be hard to remove if left too long ( retired nurse first took my first one out in mid 1977 lol - remember it well )
sorry to hear your OP hasn’t gone as well as youd hoped for
sounds like an mri is needed as you say if nothing else to eliminate infection. but hope you soon get relief
interesting. can I ask what the advanced exercises are ?
Hi Sonya
In my case it was only 1 actual pre-op, followed by a blood test just before the op itself.
I was rather disappointed with the pre-op as I had assumed that I would have a meeting with the surgeon and/or anaesthetist to discuss the op in detail and for me to ask any questions. I saw neither - the whole pre-op was done by a nurse and at no point was I given the chance to ask any questions.
I went to joint school, which was informative, but also very generalised. I had hoped at some point prior to the op to be able to ask specific questions. I felt like I was on a production line and came away feeling pretty disgruntled.
good luck with your check up Helen.
Cheers, i’ll post when I eventually get a date, get these two pre ops out the way first ![]()
Sorry to hear that,it’d be nice to think some one cared about your outcome, I know we’re all just a number but isn’t it their job! it is a major op and we need to be prepared, it’s not like the ole days,
I am hoping to see anaesthetist as I need to know if I can still have spinal, i’ll post when i’ve been, I was told I had to go joint school, I didn’t find find it informative, as you say very generalised, most I had already seen in booklet and internet, the only thing I came away with for the better was the height list!
I think with the enhanced recovery the aim is to get you mobile sooner. I was walking a couple of hours after the op, stairs on day 1, out on day 2. (I had minimally invasive surgery, with a short incision, and I didn’t have any tubes/ lines in post op. I think that makes the initial recovery very easy and pain free, but long term it makes no difference.)
To be honest I found this forum more helpful than any doctor/nurse - and you also get told of the things that the medical profession don’t tell you - such as for the first week you will pee for England (due to the internal swelling)!
very true. I think they forget for most of us it’s a new experience whereas they see / do ops every working day. agree this forum’s great - theres always someone who can answer a question ![]()
Hi. I paid and had a few sessions for advanced exersizes.
1 legged bridge (good leg up) squats moving onto 1 legged squats. clam shells. Once you can do 100 easily tie a resistance band around thigh just above the knee. You should be able to find these on google or you tube to see how they should look. Dont rush just go steady.
There you go you see, I have just learned that you pee for England, bet they don’t tell me that tomorrow
Great forum ![]()
That’s great, I want to find out if I can have MIS but I doubt it. glad you are doing well ![]()
