I’ve posted a couple of times recently after initially feeling so much better and then apparently starting to go backwards. I visited my GP due to pain and he muttered words like ‘possible revision needed’ but sent me back to my surgeon. Today I finally had my appointment. The pain in my thigh and knee has been caused by my prosthesis sinking further into the bone. This has caused muscular pain (I don’t remember nor could I pronounce the name of the muscle he mentioned) mainly because my operated leg has therefore shrunk in length which has affected my walking and to some extent balance. My unoperated leg is now 1.5 - 2 cm longer than my other leg. I now have to see the orthoptic department who will give (make) me a riser for my shoe so both legs are the same length. My other hip does not need replacing but if and when it does he’ll then sort it out. This might help others in a similar situation but currently means no revisionary surgery is necessary - such a relief. Apparently the muscle pain will go once my leg length is corrected via the heel riser in my shoes. It will be removable so can be used in most of my shoes. I hope this info helps others in a similar situation as I’m sure it’s not just me.
Hi Pippyj
Sorry to hear that this has happened especially as you were doing so well. Glad that the heel raiser solution saves having revision. Although not ideal hopefully you will be free from pain again soon.
Sandra
Thanks for posting this, Pippyj, and good luck with the orthotic. You have given me something to look into as well. I am 8+ months post op from right THR and have been frustrated with my progress, still have pain 24/7 which is aggravated further with even mild exercise. It has been getting worse over the last couple of months and I have gone back to using a cane. It is mostly around the hip, but also deep into the thigh, so your experience gives me something to check out. I last saw my surgeon in late July, when he again told me all was fine, but no one has been able to explain the pain worsening. My legs were the same length after surgery, so it is good to know that it could have changed. I finally got an appointment for a second opinion at the end of this month, and I will most certainly ask about this possibility. My original surgical experience was so awful, and the pain has been so unrelenting, I wish I had never had it done, and not sure I would be willing to have a revision if suggested. But this forum is so great for hearing others' experiences, so I am really grateful that you posted!
