Food to avoid

What foods do others find trigger pancreatic pain?

DH finds the worst food to be camembert/brie as it sets off severe pain within about 10 minute

Hot chips are no good and yet he is able to eat doner kebab and icecream without ill effect.

So it's not as simple as avoiding fats or dairy!

You list a range of very high fat foods that you shouldn't eat with pancreatitis and then go on to say "So it's not as simple as avoiding fats or dairy".

Are you having a laugh?

No I'm serious...there is nothing consistant with what he can or can't eat that is why I mention some fatty foods he can eat and others he can't.

Wanting to know if others have experienced the same.

Mostly he eats only fruit, yogurt, coconuts, macadamias...but when he's travelling he eats whatever he eats and sometimes it has a bad effect and sometimes it doesn't.

Not laughing at all

avoid all high fat foods especially cheeses. you need ti ve on 5 per cent fat per 100g and for naughty treats 12 per cent per 100g. on meats again low fat and cook in water and a little olive oil helps remove fats. thing like eggs and quorn can set of bouts of pain. low fat is the only way to reduce pains. you will normally have discomfort after eating. you need to eat small meals four times a day and no bigger than a small side plate or childs portion as this allows the pancreas to process smaller quantities with less work causing less pain. try it and you will see the bigger the meal the longer the pain after.

Still yet to get a diagnosis on the pancreatitis...so this also creates some guess work.

Like I said he can eat doner kebabs without any pain even though they are one of the highest in fats!

I don't know if pancreatic cancer is less consistant in what foods cause pain because pancreatitis seems to be very consistant in fats causing pain.

I have pancreatitis and my average daily fat intake is 30grm, a third of recommended. If he has pancreatitis then take away foods are out of bounds otherwise his life will be a misery. Anything with oil in it is fat and that includes coconuts.Pancreatitis cane be difficult to diagnose but he needs to get a proper diagnosis.

Yes it seems anything with the pancreas is hard to diagnose neutral

If the doctors suspect pancreatitis then it is better if he is referred to a specialist pancreas hospital for a proper diagnosis. Until he is given the all clear regarding pancreatitis then he must avoid all alcohol.

Doesn't drink anyway and hasn't for the last 20 years so that is easily done biggrin

I have idiopathic acute pancreatitis and  believe me and others when we say you or he will know the type if pains you get. The attacks them selves are medical recorded as worse than labour pains. And the daily pain after and sudden bouts are annoying and painful to the point you just want to cut it out.

if you suspect then do everything to prevent a full blown attack. because that is the last thing he will want and remember it KILLS.

My pain has been triggered by a dinner of steak and broccoli,  fried chicken and a tuna sandwich. But, I've eaten the same with no ill effect.  I have also had prime rib with horseradish sauce with no problem.  I'm beginning to believe it kicks in whenever it wants, regardless of what I have eaten.

My acute pancreatitis was diagnosed by x-ray, blood work (lipase above 393.  It was 1440) an ultrasound within 3 hours.  That includes wait time to get information from the tests.  I don't understand why y'all say it's difficult to diagnose. According to my blood work (liver) my pancreatitis was caused by gallstones.

Yes yes that is exactly what I'm talking about...there isn't anything consistant in what he can or can't eat except for the camembert/brie that always does it.

He had ultrasounds and full blood tests and everything came back within the normal range. Ultrasound looked at pancreas, spleen, liver, gallbladder, kidneys and all clear!

Since learnt that lipase and amylase can be within normal range for both chronic pancreatitis and pancreatic cancer.

They didn't test for cancer markers though so we need to still look into this further and maybe get an MRI.

He drinks apple juice with apple cider vinegar and swedish bitters to help prevent and/or dissolve gallstones not that any showed in the ultrasound, but hands have turned yellow before without explanation.

Genna makes it all sound very simple. Yes it can be easy to diagnose Acute pancreatitis if it's caused by gallstones but what if it's not gallstones that are the problem?

There can be a number of causes of pancreas issues and it can take many tests.

It might be acute attacks but it could be acute attacks of chronic pancreatitis.

yes agreed and it does sound more like acute attacks of chronic but we still worry about cancer as well...the pain is isolated to his back only (constant) and only when there is an acute attack does it cause other symptoms like nausea, severe pain, yellow hands etc

I can see where gallstones make for an easy diagnosis, but not so easy if the gallbladder is clear

He needs to discus with his GP the possibility of seeing a pancreas specialist if his problems persist.

I would suggest that that he stops taking home recipes for gallstones, they could make his problems worse, especially as he hasn't got gallstones.

there is more than just gallstones.  mine is idiopathic which means despite test no gallstone or fat or anything else was found before during and after.

things like sphincter odi and othwr conditions which can cause the pains.

in September last year I had full bloods done and told apart feo. a slight liver anomaly I was fine despite the odd random bouts of pain. The on  boxing day I had a full blown attack that nearly killed me. And because the enzymes travel around in the blood they can cause damage to other organs. I have been left with damage to my left lower lung. and most of the doctors etc who you tell about enzymes doing the damage really dont know about it. my gp practice has been learning of me and my condition as I am the first ever patient they have had.

My advice would be stick to a low fat diet and see it that improves the pain and if no gallstones are found. But if you really want to push your luck then keep eating the stuff that is going to lead to a full blown attack. Harsh but true if I could have prevented this I would as living in pain is not what I want

pain is normally isolated. get him checked for sphincter odi. I am in pain all the time but you learn to manage it. I am awaiting a response from the Health Secretary as to lack of researc and on costs to the government
