My afib ususlly starts at night. I experience a severe need to urinate numerous times for the first 3-4 hours of sleep. I'm tslkinh about 10+times. My doctor says its rare and is caused by the production of BNP, an enzyme from the ventricles.
Anybody else have this problem?
Yes Larry - I too had the same experience when getting episodes of paryxsmal AF. Now I am in AF continually and the problem is no longer there. My GP didn't have any explanation other than to say its no cause for concern - Regards Derek R.
Check the meds you take before going to bed. I used to take Ramipril and Sotalol in morning and Sotalol in the evening and got AF episode within a couple of hours of taking. Both are known to cause palpitations. Since giving up both I get fewer AF episodes but never at night.
I get the same kind of thing. It's a real pain!!! For years we missed it because everyone was looking for diabetes, but my blood sugar is okay. I feel your pain. I don't have any advice, execept maybe if you have more salt you body would retain more liquid, but that's dodgy for increasing BP. All the best. C
I don't have problems with needing the toilet very much but everytime I go into Fast AF i have the need to go every 10 minutes or so. The Doctor said it was natural and caused by the heart releasing hormones due to the fast HB - some link was made to the flight or fight response. When my heart slows down my toilet habits go back to normal.
yes. i just asked a friend who is a cardiac nurse and ahe has never heard of it , but every time i go into afib, this happens. i am newly diagnosed and see my dr. the 16th and will bring this up.
The same for me but less frequently than you. I have to go about 4 to 5 times a night starting around 1.30am every 1 1/2 hours.
Wake up shattered!
Me too. In fact, it now seems that frequent night-time urination is a good predictor, for me, of AF onset. 4 or 5 times a night in my case, against typically once a night without AF. I am on Sotalol, 80mg morning and night, which seems effective for me.
I have similar experience every time I get my afib. The urine is very clear and come every 15 minutes or so and fills my bladder full fast.
Yes, Larry. I have the same problem. Within an hour of a fib onset I start urinating heavily and urgently every half hour or so.
This is interesting and makes sense.
When I was in emerg with uncontrolled afib a couple of months back, I was having to pee every 10 minutes. The specialist something similar to what andynetfo said above: he said the body produces a hormonal response to expel sodium.. and this of course means you also expel liquid...
Nice to stumble on this thread. I thought I was the only one. Nobody in my medical group that I spoke to had seen my condition, but a urologist was aware of the likely cause, as described earlier. To my dismay, Endocrinology declined to see me, because they didn't know what they might do. How's that for professional curiosity?
My episodes are triggered by afib and can last until I drop from dehydration ( I once measured 4.5 liters overnight, with regular drinking of water). After five trips to the ER in six months for various conditions related to dehydration, including strokes, they decided to squash the afib with propafenone (Rhythmol), which killed the afib and urination (mostly) for about 9 years. Lately, both problems has becoming more frequent.
When this starts, always in the night, I have found that if I get up and move around, the urination quickly abates, but not the afib for awhile. Since I'm getting up to pee every 10 minutes anyway, this would seem to be a simple solution, but not at 2am. Regardless, the next day is typically lost, as I will be weak and lightheaded.
Hang on out there. Someone will figure this out eventually.
I was so relived to see this thread. My AFib started a month ago. It is normally preceded by fever (101F) and happens around 11:30 PM or at night. Funny how even the time is so regular.
Once AFib starts,I need to go to pee every 15 mins. I spoke with my doctor and he said it was because the heart releases some hormones.
I am hoping this is temporary and AFib goes on it's own, but till then, thanks a lot for the thread. Helps to know there are others in the same boat.
Same here. Mine seems to be due to hyperthyroidism which both can produce afib and urinary frequency. It might be worth checking the thyroid out.
Yes , absolutely !! I have severe bladder incontinence a long with manyother issues. A Urologist couldn't tell me why but suggested surgery ,etc. I refused because he couldn't tell me why .
A cardiologist patted me on the back and said there were no problems with my heart. Due to a great Dr. , she insisted I see another cardiologist. He listened , said he had no clue what was wrong with me but suggested implanting a loop reader . He
Saying it would read my heart 24/7 for 3 years..we went to his office a few days later to have the nurse remove the bandage. Once the nurse saw the results of the loop reader , in came the Dr saying my heart was in Afib and was staying in Afib!!well over 200 heart beats most of the time..he immeadiately put me in meds for Afib and meds to avoid a stroke. After a week of meds the incontinence is totally gone. !!
If you are dealing with Afib , this loop reader plant is a blessing, your monitored 24/7. The readings go right on my phone.etc
I've had lone afib instances for 30 years. Have experienced the same at onset often.
I have had this problem, and when I brought it up to my heart doctor, in a major hospital, she never heard anything about frequent urination and AFIB. and told me to see a urologist. It bothers me most at night, I have had it two of the last three nights and besides affecting my sleep, it worries me, I see this original post by Larry was four years ago, any advice, or suggestions on what to do would be appreciated
I had a discussion on this with the ward sister when I was in hospital having a pacemaker fitted. She said that getting up to urinate during the night often triggered an AF attack in patients. She also agreed that passing a hard stool can stimulate the vagus nerve and start AF.
I only urinate at night, nothing else, I am 70 years old and probably have an enlarged prostrate, and go at least 2 times a night anyway, but when this AFIB hits, I go at least once an hour, and there is allot of urine. I drink some water when this occurs because I am afraid there will be no fluid left in me
