Gastroscopy and Colonoscopy

Hi, has anyone had a Gastroscopy and Colonoscopy procedure?  My  appointment is on Thursday and the  information they sent gives me a choice of sedation so I am asleep for both procedures or have a throat spray for the gastroscopy and gas and air for the colonoscopy.  If I opt for the sedation, I have to arrange for someone to come along to escort me home afterward.  Both my son and daughter are unable to get time of work on that day.  I was thinking of the other options (so i dont need and escort) - throat spray and gas and air, but I’ve read that people with Fibro react badly because they feel more pain than others during the procedure (which makes sense) and have suffered with Fibro flare for days after.

Can anyone let me know if they have experience of these procedures.

My son had these done and he doesn't have fibro but said if he ever had to get it done again he would take the sedation hope this helps x

It does help.

I have to remember, it doesn't if my mind is telling me one thing.

My body will tell me the 'truth'.

I'm going to re-schedule the procedure for when my son or daughter can take time off work.

Have had both, I would definitely advise the sedation 😀 and the sedation is very light and wears off very quickly. Be gentle with yourself

Hi Ela I had the colonoscopy 20 years ago and apart from feeling a bit drowsy and  a little bloated I was ok I was in no pain afterwards and  they left me for an an hour to rest and recover my daughter came with me but there were other people having the same procedure who were on their own the staff were lovely and helpful they made sure I was ok before I left    hope all goes well for you gentle hugs

I think it is a wise choice to have the sedation. I had a colonoscopy recently and I had the sedation with no  bad after effects. Knowing what is involved I would'nt contemplate doing it any other way.

The preparation work the day before is the worse bit, the actual procedure under sedation is a piece of cake. Try to get your appointment first thing in the morning, so you don't wait around feeling hungry. It is worth doing just for piece of mind. Best of luck.

Hi Ela; yes I agree with others.....I had light sedation with mine, and found the procedure went very smoothly, and did not remember any of same.....it is a shame that neither of your children can help you.....do you think a neighbour may be able to help; or in that it is only a light sedation, the clinic/hospital may allow you to go home via a taxi, and go to bed and rest.....there is really no Major Anaesthetic, so not the same problem of having someone watch over you..............??   Bron

​I had both of these done last year without sedation and they were ok.  I would have them done again without sedation.  I have fibro but was ok.

I had to have them done and in January this year under went Nissen's fundoplication and have no more problems with acid reflux and other symtoms.  Everything routed one way.  I feel really well and healthy.

Hi, I had this procedure done last week please do go for sedation. 

Get a taxi home if no other means.
