Hi all I'm a 54 year old woman with gout doing the herbal treatments don't like meds to many side affects for me i have a really bad rash almost bluster like things on my arms and legs I looked at them under a magnified lamp that my husband has they are yellow looking and hard they look like uritic crystals and they are making holes in my clothes have any of you had this problem?? I really need feed back thank you
Maybe you're allergic to one of the herbs you're taking. Have you tried an antihistamine? You need to find the culprit that is causing the rash.
No I have not had this reaction... However take black cherry joice it has really helped my gout that gets into my knees.
Thank you I am drinking the tart cherry juice but wonder if I need to also get tablets or capsules too I just started the uricel and celery seeds..this is a wonder to me and can't seem to find any infio on line about it at all. Thank you for replying my friend
Because of lack of full stops it is not clear if the blisters are caused by the medication or are a symptom. You also don't say which medication you were trying and what were the symptoms.
IF you are taking Allopurinol and you are getting blisters of the skin - stop immediately and see a doctor urgently.
IF the blisters and crystals are a symptom of your gout and not the treatment then you have a serious case of excess urate in your blood. As you refuse medication but want to take herbs instead - well good luck. There are plenty of people on here who can advise you on herbs.
As you are taking herbs however these symptoms could be caused by the herbs, and maybe you should see the person who prescribed them.
For anyone here to give more advice we also need to know the results of any tests that have been done especially the blood urate test.
Hi I gave had tophous gout for years and need to take Allopurinol, and Colchicine/Probinicid to control it.
What you are describing sounds suspicially like Tophi. I would strongly suggest you see a MD as soon as possible to find out exactly what you have, as tohpi usually indicate the gout is doing serious damage to your joints and kidney's.
Hope you don't mind me poking my "Gout " nose in, but as an
ocassional sufferer , I wondered if one of your body parts is causing
the abundance of uric acid ??
I do take herbal remedy for gout, which works extremely well for me.
Thank goodness !!
In my case it is genetic, I also have the both genes for Hemochromatosis and the hemochromatosis also causes psuedogout on top of the regular gout in my case.
Before it had been effectively treated ultrasoud scans showed the tophi had spread to my ankles, wrists and hands and I had large nodules of tophi on my hands, elbows and tops of my feet. It took almost two years for high doses of the drugs to dissolve the tophi and I'm on a much lower maintance dose now although I still get flares.
If a herbal remedy works I think thats great, I'd personally rather be able to do that but by the time tophi start to develop its to late and strong drugs are the only thing that can get the uric acid levels down fast enough to prevent further damage to one's joints and kidneys, thats why I hope the OP sees a MD right away..
Undoubtedly your gout and mine was caused by a body part - probably our genes; and possibly exposure to environmental lead which effects the kidney.
As for your gout being controlled by herbs - why not inform us all which ones?
I'd be really interested to know how long you have been gout free, at what level were your blood urates pre treatment and what level are they now? What it is important to understand is that gout is not the underlying disease but the symptom of high levels of blood urates. Many patients are happy to simply keep the gout symptoms at bay, not appreciating that the high blood urates are insidiously damaging other organs in the body (most notably but not exclusively the heart, kidney and liver). It is this long term organ damage which is the real risk, and one of the reason that gout sufferers have a substantially reduced life expectancy.
What a ghastly thing to live with. I use Bromelain continuously, one
a day, and I believe that people with Arthritis, do the same.
I have also suggested to Betsy to see her G.P ,she said she would
do so tomorrow ,
Hope your social life is not held back with it
Jacqueline
You're right jwrhn1951, I forgot about tophi gout, it definitely sounds like it.
Me again, more questions !!! are G.P's aware of the different types
of gout ?? My first encounter with it, was alarming, I thought I
had broken my big toe, and took myself off to A&E,, well, a taxi did !!
The nurse who saw me just said ""It's Gout " gave me some pain
killers ,a pair of crutches and sent me home,, another taxi !!
Hi
I have suffered with gout for many years for which the attacks were extremely painful so i have always relied on the medication, however it takes time to find the correct drug and therefore prescription. For me herbal treatments sound like they should do the trick but in reality either take too long to kick in or have no impact on the gout at all
if you have a rash then you are most likely to be allergic to something you are taking, stop one treatment at a time to see if that helps
I would be very surprised to see Uric crystals appearing through your skin, generally build up of the acid will cause attacks and if not treated you will get lumps under the skin called Tophi. These can of course be treated by medication which takes an age to disolve them or you can have them removed under general anaesthetic.
If i was you i would go to see my GP and get a refferal to a Gout specialist. There are plenty of drugs out there, you just need to find the right one(s) because we are all different and they will all effect you in different ways. No one can say i use this so you should, please seek medical advice now
Good luck
Thanks
the same here they gave me pain killers and sent me home.. i have had a chronic illness other than gout that i had to take pretty strong meds for hep c and they took thier toll on my body with all the side affects from the gout meds i guess im just a little scared ya know? i see a PRN not a doctor. But im calling Monday morning i was afraid it was tophi and now it really sounds like it. again Thank you I dont need judgement right now just a little advice and someone to talk to about this.
Absolutely spot on.
As for the herbal treatments - I suspect that people don't realise how serious gout is and assume that by getting rid of an attack, then they have stopped the damage being done to organs.
Damage to the organs is a factor with gout. Luckily, my doctors have all been good at running blood tests to see what's going on with me. At one time when I was younger, I was eating a lot of processed foods with nitrites, hot dogs, salami, etc, constantly going to the ER or seeing a doctor. My health suffered tremendously until I changed my eating habits. I don't eat that junk anymore, thus my need for medical attention has dwindled down to yearly physicals. It's good when you find a doctor that understands and knows about your specific ailments.
I think you are probably correct. My Toohi were solid but I have read of them oozing through the skin like toothpaste.
Rusty, I was reading that people who get tophus have poor circulation. This is the case with you?
Not at all. I was relatively fit when it started. My heart and circulation are tested annually - untreated gout sufferers have an increased heart risk of over 200%. Mine came on fast - in a matter of weeks - loads of tophi on hands feet and wrists. Previous to this I was aware of an occasional dull toe ache, but not even enough to take a parecetomol. I used to take low dose aspirin, which can cause gout. However, one side of my family 6 of 8 cousins all got gout under 40.
FYI the research indicates that it takes 3 months - 66 months to remove tophi by keeping the urate level at the bottom end of normal.
I think in the UK doctors are often not aware that the unrated must be flushed for months or years, before going to a low maintenance dose of allopurinol or similar. They seem to be content to just stop the toe pain.
How long did it take to get rid of your tophi? How quickly did they arrive?
Btw when the tophi were forming I had a tingling and numbness in my hands and arms. Did you get that?
