Guillian Barre Syndrome

Hello, I am not seeing any recent posts on GBS so I hope I may get some response to my concerns. Nearly eight weeks ago, I caught Campylobacter, which, in itself wasn’t too bad but I almost immediately started having pains in my shins and felt lightheaded a lot of the time and felt generally unwell. I saw the doctor three weeks after the infection and she sent me for blood tests and other tests because my blood pressure was very high in her office. Meanwhile my lower legs continued to be painful, more aching and burning than pain, and my head still felt weird, like I was (and still am) living behind a curtain! My doctor sent me for more blood tests more relevant to nerve issues. I also have a rare form of blood cancer (high platelets) and my hematology team this week carried out more blood tests for infection, etc. GBS had been mentioned to me earlier on as something to watch out for, but, as I have no loss of function in feet, legs or hands, I don’t really fit the bill! My current symptoms are burning legs, mostly lower leg, intermittent strange mild sensation in arms, but no tingling or numbness. My left foot already has neuropathy in my left foot from shingles three years ago. I have not lost any senses in my limbs and I can walk, though I now use a walking stick because of my wobbly head as the lightheadedness continues. But I’m not happy with how I feel! Both my GP and the hematology team feel that I might just be taking a long time to get over the infection but it was eight weeks ago! I do hope it is that but I would welcome any responses from anyone who has experienced similar symptoms.

My husband developed Guillaine Barre syndrome 15 years ago. It happened over a few days with tingling limbs, muscle weakness to the point where he couldn’t walk or speak or eat. He was hospitalised for 2 weeks and they did a spinal lumber puncture to confirm. Fortunately it didn’t affect his breathing too bad, it took a long time to get over and even now he still gets the feeling as if he’s walking on pebbles. Its a very difficult illness to diagnose but his symptoms were text book. Hope you get sorted

Thank you for replying! Yes, your husbands case does sound text book and it must have been an awful time for you both. Mine is weird as I’m not really having the symptoms that require me to go to A&E and I hope it won’t come to that. I do have a bag packed though in case! My legs and hands are strong in spite of my not feeling well generally. Thanks again. I wish you and your husband well.
