HI, I've been trying to find a med that will work for my anxiety/panic for over a year now. Feel like I've tried most antidepressants and none of them seem to help. Have tried, zolft, celexa, cymbalta, Effexor, Prozac, Buspar and Lexapro. I'm seeing my dr today and I'm going to try Paxil. Is it possible to just be resistant to antidepressants? I feel like I'm never going to get better, in fact things have just gotten worse over the past year. Has anyone had a similar experience and found something that worked? I know everyone is different but I don't know if what I'm experiencing is normal. Thanks for your advice!
Hello
Your real problems here is you have tried seven different medications, and you have muddied the waters because one of the earlier medications may have worked well, You have now brought about another drug and everytime you do this the list of preferred medications becomes less.
This is because you will be unable to relate to many of the tried medications.
It seems that the way you are thinking is I will try this drug and then the next. It is your GP who should make that decision. We always need to understand we can not work this way with medications, it is important we do not end up at the bottom of the preffered list.
The problem you have got worse means you have past through a medication that was working for you, and that is not very clever as you could have missed a medication that was working for you.
Your GP needs to take this in hand and direct you to preferred treatment. Not you telling the GP what you want
Sorry

Thanks for you reply. So, you think I didn't give each medicine a fair try? Like I stopped taking one that may have worked too early? My doctor would put me on a med for a month and if I wasnt feeling better, up my dose. Ususally I didnt benefit from the dose increase so he would discontinue that drug and we'd try another. Honestly, I'm in the process of finding a new doctor because I really don't think my current doctor has helped me. He doesnt explain my options or the potential side effects - just writes me a script and sends me on my way. I'm looking for a second option.
Go for your second opinion, fair enough. You need to understand however your choice of medications will be the same as your old Doctor.
One month on a medication like these drugs is a very short period and on occasions the Doctor will need you back at four weeks to up the dose, so eight weeks may be a better time period to start and assess if the drug is settling down. What you could do if you want is look on the NHS CHOICES Web page and look up your Practice, your Doctors have a Speciality so choose the one who deals with Mental Health, you will then have a GP who have a better idea of Mental Health. Although most GPs have a good idea on how to treat Anxiety.
When you talk of options each medication is an option. If not already you could ask for CBT and a CPN. Today I have just had mine visit this pm.
You may also find your new GP may wish to back track on your script to retry an old medication you have tried in the past. If that is the case go with that, with open mind
Tell us how you get on
Good Luck

Thanks so much for you input, it's very helpful. It looks like i can't get in with the new dr unitl january 17th so I will have to stick with my current one for now. (we have limited choices where I live). Thanks again!!
Check your GP Surgery, or at least your new Surgery.
It is important you get the right Doctor to support your needs
Remember your GP is in partnership with you and has your health interests at heart
