Has anyone managed to 'reverse' their fatty liver?

As my question asks, has anyone managed to do this and if so, how have you done it?  I realise it is a lifestyle change and i am doing that at the moment (ie going to weightwatchers, going to the gym) but apart from having the ferritin levels checked, how can you tell if the liver is 'repairing' from fatty liver?

Hi Carina,

I've been wondering the same thing. My doctor never said what I had to do.  I've gotten blood work back and he said it was looking better but how does he really know without another CT SCAN.  Very confusing when they don't give you much info.

I've got an appointment to see my GP next week so will go armed with lots of questions which i hope she can answer.  I had fatty liver diagnosed earlier this year along with some liver cysts but after a follow up scan i have now been discharged but i feel they can't just 'leave it like that' - that's my opinion anyway but will let you know what she says.

Hi there is diet on the net about fatty liver.. Go and check there smile

Hi Carina I was also diagnosed with fatty liver and 3 lesions, they fully discharged me and I wasn't happy about no follow up . As things not improved I was referred to different hospital and asked them to re check the original scan. They have now decided to do another scan as they are not sure diagnosed correctly. If you have doubts press for another scan

Carnia, I did. It was not just weight loss it is what I ate to get there. I took out all bad carbs in my diet. I only lost 10 pounds and my liver was no longer fatty. It is the carbs that get you. WW is good, but do not get your points from processed foods. and their meals are usully high in carbs too. I don't think you can really tell if the liver has been reversed without a test. or ct scan. But I know my energy level came back just after a few weeks. And the slight dull feeling I had in my liver area went away too. Lots of water.. water is the best detox for the liver..

Hi carina at the moment ime healing from a transplant witch I had in July this year  i have to go back to hospital regularly and see specialists my dietitian tells me to eat a special diet  for the moment most foods are fruit mixed nuts plenty of water and do some exercise not heavy training upper body running walking machine etc then you will find in your blood tests it will alter a lot hope I have helped you BOBWHATMOUGH

I had a follow up scan from my original first one.  I've also written a letter to my consultant and awaiting a reply.  I'm surprised in a way that I wasn't given any sort of dietary information.  I try and drink 2 pints of water a day, sometimes with fresh lemon juice in it.  I have quite a lot of weight to lose. Are you now waiting for an appointment for your next scan?

I have fatty liver and fibroscan scan 10.1 .I weighed 9 st 7oz.

I was advised to lose 1/2st and cut sugar ,eat healthy.low fat diet.get more exercise.

I go for a walk every day,low fat diet and have cut sugar out of my diet.

I have never drank alcohol.

I'm have back and hip problems causing a lot of pain so unable to walk far.hoping my next fibroscan is ok...holly

Hello Carina, a very interesting question you pose! It is only last week the the consultant I am seeing uttered the immortal words "in my opinion your fatty liver problem is reversible" so I await an appointment with a NHS dietician, also am having a fibroscan done in mid January, my first problem is needing to lose approx 2 stone in weight, I suggested having a leg amputated, but he just gave a puzzled look and suggested I keep taking the medication. Best wishes

that is very encouraging news but did you have to very strict with yourself?  I go to weightwatchers every week and it has taken me a long time to lose a stone but i still have lots more to lose as i am in the obese category.  I need to up my game with the lifestyle change especially the excercise as i seem to have slacked a bit just lately but i will get back into it.  I am trying to cut down carbs and sugar although sometimes it is hard.  I try and drink 2 pints of water at work each day, i can't seem to manage anymore than that but i have asked for a soda stream for Xmas so that i can do my own sparkling water as i love that but don't tend to buy the stuff cos it contains salt would you believe?  Any hints and tips are much appreciated.

May i ask why you needed a transplant if you don't mind me asking?

How did you manage to get a fibroscan test?  nothing like that has been mentioned to me.

How did you manage to get a fibroscan test?  this has not been offered to me and i've heard that this is a non invasive test to see if your liver is damaged or not due to fatty liver or anything else.  I live in the UK but i will mention this to my GP next week.

My Gp sent me to see a liver specialist when he got results from blood tests.

The first thing they did as fibroscan.

It only take a few minutes and results stright away.

I had end stage liver cancer, with cirrhosis and multiple liver lesions .

Carina I had never even heard of a fibroscan myself, it was the consultant who mentioned it to me on a previous visit, I am under the excellent care of NHS Scotland.

Hi Carina. I also have fatty liver. I didn't know the liver could repair it's self in that way, just stop it from getting worse. Do you have hepc? Unfortunately I am not doing everything I could as far as lifestyle changes like you are.

I don't what is happening to my posts. I'm hitting a wrong key or something, they disappear before I finish my reply. That is awesome you seem to be doing good after a transplant in the summer. How are you feeling? Has it been a hard recovery? My hepc is now full blown chirrosis and I am on the new treatment for 2 months now, will take a year. My gastro dr referred me to a new hepatologist and said I needed to see and treat at transplant hospital. I hate to be negative but that doesn't sound good to me and I am thinking I will end up on transplant list. take care, blessings.

Hello all, just thought I would let you know that I have received a letter today from my consultant.  The letter is very reassuring and has answered my questions as to how he has come to the conclusion of my discharge.  He suggests I continue to have annual liver function blood tests but basically my cysts are not of concern (and it states in the letter that they had a team of specialists going over my results as originally it was thought I had a hydatid cyst which thank goodness it isn't).  In general I am happy with the way I have been monitored over this as I have had a very worrying year from the initial detection of a liver cyst in April to my discharge last month.  I am determined to continue with my lifestyle changes of losing weight, excersing etc to help my fatty liver and control my Type 2 diabetes.   I feel I can move on now as like I said I've had a bad year this year worrying about my health, hoping 2016 will be better for me concerning health.  I hope you all have your health concerns sorted and wish you all a very healthy New Year.
