Hello everyone! I have not had a hip replacement, but I am currently having an episode of severe pain that began after I swam laps (some of which was the breaststroke).
It does not hurt walking as long as I don't walk too fast, also doesn't hurt if I bend at the waist or squat down. What does hurt so badly that I can't even do it, is to try and lunge on that side. Also, kind of achy in the low back area.
So, I know I need to see a doctor, but my question to you all is:
1) Do you think I have blown my hip out?
2) Does the pain come and go? If I rest it and take an anti-inflammatory will it eventually go away. (I know it could return, ut I'm just wondering if this is anything like episodes of back pain.)
Thanks in advance for helping out a potential new hip patient (who is desperately wanting to avoid that initial doctor visit).
Im a week old hippie and recovering so well. Always best to have it checked out. I avoided seeking medical advice for years and just kept the pain at bay by taking pills, avoided exercise etc but there does come a time when you just have to take the bull by the horns and talk to your doctor about the pain. Write it all down as a log as I could never remember the dates od bad pain spells. An xray of the hip will be the only way to detect a blown hip though.
Could you give a more detailed description of your pain?
what do you mean by can't lunge for example. Did you feel pain while swimming? Immediately after swimming? Or the next day?
Where exactly does it hurt? The side of your hip?
my bad hip mainly hurt my butt, for other people it is the front of the hip. If you could be a bit more detailed that would help. How far down you leg does the pain go?
It's in the butt. it seems to hurt if I do any twisting motion. i did not feel pain while swimming--it came on a day or so later. I have not exercised since it began. Lunge--same thing as stepping out with one foot and bending the front knee. I do not have pain on the side of my hip--feels like its around the bone I sit on.
Oh, I won't wait that long! i work out regularly and have a kid to move to college in 2 weeks. I need to be healthy right now! Of course, there never is a good time to hurt, is there?
Someone mentioned a pulled muscle-I've had one before, this doesn't really feel like one, but I can't say I have had a pulled muscle in this particular area, so I don't know. I'll take a pulled muscle over a blown hip any day.
Hi TD3, I have had both done now, dont swim too much or ou might start to sink...Get it checked out, ask for an Xray...Just ask...for a thourough diagnosis, I would have been properly diagnosed 6 months earlier if I had played the Xray card earlier... Ian.
The only way to find out what this is is to get your hip x rayed. My arthritis started with groin pain and that was the main symptom for some time which was why at first I did not realise it was my hip.
welcome to this wonderful forum - as you found out, we are all here to answer your concerns and questions based on our personal experience ..
I agree with all the responses -
most important is to bite the bullet and make an appointment with your GP and get an xray ... my pain started in my groin and I was sure I pulled a muscle - never even crossed my mind that it could be OA -
yours might be something else though, so get that x-ray ....
if if your having severe pain it's time to see a doctor. I could guess any # of things that it could be,but without X-rays or a expertise a doctor would be the best one to identify what is causing your pain. Sometimes it's something that can be repaired with therapy. I hope it's nothing serious. If you had blown out your hip you wouldn't be walking. You'd be in the ER. Been there done that,
Hi. I had my hip replaced 5 weeks ago. I started with some groin pain after running in Dec last year. Was too busy so kept putting off visit to a Physio therapist I had used previously. Honestly. It took him 10 minutes of examining me to tell me I had OA pretty bad, he was surprised as I'm only 44.
I then went to doctors and told her what Physio had said. Because she new the guy she knew he would be right so sent me for xray that day. Xray showed no cartilage left so op only real option and the rest happened quickly.
If I'd went to Doctors straight off I'm not sure she'd have realised what problem was. Pain arrived one day and within 6 months new hip.
My advice..... A Physio best option. He can help fix you if muscle, if not he should be able to diagnose better than GP.
It doesn't necessarily mean you have osteo arthritis, you could have osteoporosis. My mother has very bad osteoporosis and she gets cracks in her bones for no reason at all. In other words she doesn't fall which results in broken or cracked bones, they just crack on their own.
in osteo arthritis you loose the cartilage which never grows back so that is a deteriorating condition. Since your pain is rather a quick onset perhaps you merely cracked a bone inside your hip and over time it will heal up again. Medical Imaging is what is required. I know we all hate the inconvience of going to the doctor and then going for tests but it is important for you to know.
My sofa cushions were to hard. I recently took them off and put on a deep soft foam mattress from a bed. My un operated hip started to ache (butt cheek pain) but since I have replaced the sofa cushions with the deep soft foam mattress it barely aches at all now. I made this switch about a month ago and I am amazed at the reduction (but not elimination) in the butt cheek pain.
Good advice from all so far, just a cautionary word, after nearly four years of waiting for my first left hip, my world became trapped in pain and unable to do anything, work, drive, play with grandchildren. Knew I'd have to have the second right hip when left done. All complete now, with a matching pair. On the slow road to recovery but full anticipate life without pain. Painkillers only mask, they don't treat. Good luck with all of that.
Thank you all for the feedback. it's better today, but I am also still taking an anti-inflammatory.
I was screened for osteoporosis last fall, so I doubt that is what I have since that test was good. However, I do have osteoarthritis in my low back, so that is definitely something that could be going on.
I just don't want to be blindsided by a Dr. You know, prepare for the worst and hope for the best kind of thing!
For those of you who have had your hips replaced, how long was the hospital stay and recovery?
I went in Thursday, op 3pm. Up Friday walking with frame. Saturday two sticks walking up and down stairs (I was never given crutches). Sunday home.
Two weeks pretty bad pain (but controllable with drugs) then improved every day. Am 6 weeks. No stick at home. Stick when going out. No oa pain at all!!! Only hurts if I do too much
