Help! Day 8 post total hip replacement

Hi all new here. today is day 8 after my thr and the evenings are very uncomfortable doesnt matter where i sit i just can not get comfortable is anyone else finding this?

Hi welcome to the forum, I haven't had a HR but did fracture my hip and pelvis last June but do know from speaking to others who were able to have op that you are extremely early days, ice is very good for helping swelling and inflammation, and heat also can help to relieve sore muscles.

I hoping you have been prescribed adequate pain relief as well and told how often to take them.

Just remember you have had a major op that's very invasive so don't try to rush it too fast.

Contact your surgery if you are in agony though just to get checked out.

Hi Carol

By "can't get comfortable", do you mean you're in pain? If so, what medication have you been given?

Hi Carol 92465

The first 2 weeks are rough.  The night times were the hardest for me.  Did your doctor give you pain medications that were to last about 2+ weeks?  They would be gradually reduced and by the time you finish his/her schedule you can reduce them even more and within a short time just take over the counter meds if needed.  At least that's how it worked for me.

At first I was worried about taking pain pills but boy am I glad I did.  You will know when it's time to give them up.  Don't try to do too much but be sure to walk around a bit several times a day.   Moving around is important in the healing process.

Every one is different.  Don't give up, if you treat your body right while healing it should work out.

I hope you will feel better soon.

Hi carol i am 5 months post op and the first cple were very uncomfortable especially in bed. I still have twinges and uncomfortable legs. Just be patient

Hi Carol first few weeks are hard. Hard to sleep, hard to find comfortable

position. It will get better with time. Take your medicacin, do some excersice. You just 8 days after hip replecement and it's brutal operation and

Your body need to heel. Rest when you tired .I hope you will feel

better soon . Take care.

Hi Carol. Oh I remember those first few weeks so well. Poor sleep. Pain and could not sit for more than an hour. How I hated that bed and was sick of the sight of it !

5 months post op. Back to my busy life. Still have aches and pains but getting better every day. I look at that bed now and think. Mmm it wasn't so bad after all. I wish I could just lie there today. Dose. And watch TV or read 😂

I would describe recovery like childbirth. It's bloody awful but you soon forget how bad those first few weeks were. This forum was my saving grace. I have made some good virtual friends and followed their recovery. One I will hopefully meet in Australia very soon.

Love and warm hugs and hang in there. This too will pass.

Hi Carol, I, too, and 8 days post-op! The nights for me trying to find a position or very difficult. I was dealing with constipation and on Monday at tempted to completely cut out my pain meds. At the same time PT also increased my exercises. Needless to say Monday night and all day Tuesday were not great for me. I realized that I do need the pain meds and I must modify. Constipation is no longer an issue, as I have increased my intake of stool softeners, laxatives, prune juice, and prunes. I drink a lot of water on a regular basis and have also increased that. For me, the issue is the very deep and dull ache in the hip on the interior portion. My PT is coming today and I'm hoping to get some insight. Part of the struggle is others feel I should be making more progress, but I believe they had a different expectation of me going into the surgery. This form is a lifesaver and thanks to all who reply.

Sorry THR is a real difficult surgery to overcome. If you are only 8 day post OP it would help to take pain meds to help control the pain and get sleep and rest.

Hi kristen its so nice to speak to someone who had the op same time as me i hope you dont mind me asking what is your daily routine what can and cant u do i feel i was let out of hospital not knowing anything are you still on 2 crutches i have tried 1 crutch but dont feel ready for that yet xx

I was discharged from the hospital on the same day of surgery. I was immediately weight bearing within 4 hours of surgery. I was sent home with a walker, not crutches. On Saturday I was allowed to walk my 13-step staircase daily, once each way. I am able to manage in and out of bed and to the bathroom with my walker. I sit in a chair for about 2 hours each morning and then rest with my legs elevated. I do have swelling of my operated tight and the brining presented on Tuesday. I alternate between horizontal and vertical throughout the day... however,.more horizontal.

I will see my scar for the first time today when the PT comes back. Also an aid is coming today to assist me with my first shower. I must say I am having good more pain than I expected, much of which is worse that I experienced prior to surgery. Ice is my friend! I am walking about the house to and from the bathroom 7 - 10 times per day.

All depends where you live regarding support after op. In UK normally discharged with a sheet of written exercises. I was on crutches for three weeks although fully weight bearing. Like you I was more comfortable in the early days lying with feet elevated. Couldn't sit for long.

We all think we will be up and running much more quickly than we are. This is a lengthy recovery. I see a great difference now at 5 months post op but I expect it will take up to 12 months to be fully recovered.

hi kristen,,

Unless the "others" had hip replacement surgery they cannot know what you are hgoing throug ... and even if they had one ...try not to compare yourself to others ... even here in the forum healing is an individual journey, at our own speed ... we support each other endlessly, darling ...

so come here any time okay?

big warm hug

hi carol,

you are very early in recovery from this major surgery and so much healing and repairing is taking place ... this can make you feel antsy and restless - you cannot really move about as there is still some pain ...

It will settle down darling ...just hang in there ...

big warm hug

renee

Renee,

Many thanks for the kind words and the big warm hug!

Kristen

Is it the feeling of 'sitting on a pile of golf balls'  -  I had that one, it's one of the 'pleasures' of this recovery - see my website (address at the bottom of the moderator's page https://patient.info/forums/discuss/thr-useful-resources-487147 which has many links to useful resources).

We do find it uncomfortable after the operation as our bodies start to try to knit back together and recover from this brutal operation.  Sleeping on our backs is yet another uncomfortable experience.

How you doing? Hope your pain has become manageable. It takes a few weeks to get thru the most difficult part.

Once you begin to walk 3-5 times a day and PT most of the muscles slowly return as the muscles begin to heal & get stronger. Take it slow and never push. Rest is just as important as exercise.

Im 5 weeks out from revision & broken femur from old THR recalled .so have extra cable holding broken totancher and 13" implant in place. Get up don't sit to long even if legs ache take a break & uses pain meds & muscle cream. Helps a lot and pressure pump from Amazon a boot to exercise legs and massage. Keep blood flow & oxygen moving.

This will pass I have been thru 3 THR each one seems to get harder as I age. However each one is different and recovery is always positive. PT WALKING EXERCISES, when your ready. I started PT 6 days after revision for 2weeks daily in rehab center, and so glad I did it so early in recovery compared to the prior two . PT EARLY with pain meds helps keep the muscles from fading .

Hopexxx
