Herpes from sharing drink?

A friend of mine has genital herpes. Yesterday we went to dinner and I accidentally picked up his drink and took a sip from it (it had a straw). Does this put me at risk for herpes say worse ways his saliva was still on the straw? I think he has hsv-1 also but doesn't currently have a cold sore on his mouth and never has.

Not at all impossible unless he has hsv 2 on.his mouth area

Would this always be visible if he did?

Does he have genital or oral herpes

Hsv 2 doesn't always mean genital

He has only ever had an outbreak on his penis so it is HSV 2. I think he is positive for HSV 1 also but has never had a cold sore on lips.

Obviously you can't catch it if you are sharing a drink only through sex

Genital herpes is an infection of the genitals. You cannot get it through contact with another body part unless that other body part is also infected, in which case it wouldn't be *genital* herpes. Just saying.

So, you cannot catch genital herpes from a straw/cup, but you can potentially catch *oral* herpes that way, which is nearly always Type 1, though you're much less likely to acquire it if he had no cold sores at the time and has never had any.

This is common sense I was saying not all hsv 2 is in the genital area

Not all, but the vast majority of HSV-2 cases are indeed genital. Oral HSV-2 is not common and not really an issue even if someone does have it there. It rarely ever outbreaks or sheds orally, and is the least infectious herpes infection as a result (genital HSV-2 is the worst, then oral HSV-1).
