Im 12 wks post THR ...I had an uncemented Ceramic prosthesis. I have completed the 2weeks physio and still do 40 mins physio every day. I also walk most days for half an hour. I still walk with 1 crutch. I find if I dont use oneI I tend to limp as I get tired and my surgeon advised me to use one if I felt I needed to. So as not to get into bad habits....I have weeks where I feel I have improved but still get pain in the scar and muscles. I am awaiting a knee replacement and my knee is really painfull....just wondered if anyone is still getting pain after 12 weeks. Feel like its not going as I thought it would. Started off feeling so positive. Im 60 and have worked at my physio.... feeling frustrated.
Yes, I am 11 weeks today post/op. I have struggled with weakness in my thigh the past few weeks. I walk unassisted, and just walk as my exercise. I plan on getting to the gym to ride a bike and stretch more as well. I was told you will experience the pains up to one year. I had the Anterior approach. I’m sure that’s why I’m dealin with the muscle issue. Keep pushing...that’s my plan!
Dear Kim
I think your progress to full recovery would be faster and better if you used both crutches UNTIL you are walking with a good strong even gait. It makes it easier to retrain your body and last it protects your back.
Best wishes, Richard
Yes maybe, but I used both crutches for the first 6 weeks. I walk with an even gait with one crutch but fully expected to not need to use crutches at all at week 12, but as I said, I seem to limp without the crutch. My right hip has been replaced and now waiting for my left knee to undergo TKR......maybe it will improve once I have had the knee done. I just wondered if anyone still had to use a crutch and still had muscle pain and my thigh feels week and hurts sometimes at week 12? Thanks for your input.
Hi there. Oh thanks for your reply, I am relieved that I am not alone, and other people still have pain. I have been worried that its never going to get back to some sort of normality. I can walk without the crutch but as I say I tend to limp halfway on my walk. Just relieved that maybe some people take a little longer. I have put off having the THR for 2 years and the TKR for longer, so maybe my muscles have just got a lot weaker or used to working wrongly, as having to compensate for the pain and difficulty of walking. Thanks very much for your help
That is very good advice from your surgeon - use a stick if you need it, walk straight.
Problems with knees after THR are not uncommon, it seems the hip pain masks knee problems.
Once the hip is fixed, you find the underlying knee pain surfaces.
Do you massage the scar - I was told to massage it very firmly with Bio Oil to prevent scar tissue build up.
Best wishes
Graham
Yes I do massage the scar and it has healed fine. Think is more muscular and the pain seems to be in the thigh bone, like a tooth ache. I will continue with the crutch and hope that by swimming and other exercise, things will improve. I have had knee problems for years and now with the stress of putting weight onto the knee it has got worse. My appointment with surgeon is at the end of this month so hopefully I will get referred to get my knee done. Thanks for the advice.
It could be deep scar tissue - hence the very firm massage.
Hopefully you will get good advice when you see your surgeon who will be able to inspect your leg.
Hi Kim.
I had total RHR July 2016 and was walking well and unaided between 12-14 weeks but I was on crutches January to end September that year and from having no knee pain before this time I now do have some knee pain (left knee) and I think this is down to compensating for my hip pain before op. So it’s reasonable to think that it will hinder your hip recovery and also cause you to limp a little if your other knee is in need of replacement. Stick with it though totally worth it in the long run!!
Good luck.
Graham 😃
Dear Kim
Are your muscles sufficiently strong to support you when walking without any aids? If not then I strongly suggest that you use both crutches and keep doing the strengthening exercises.
I feel sure that your knee situation does not help!
All the best, Richard
Thanks good to know that Im not the only one not running up hills and walking unaided at 4 weeks!!! I plan to keep up the exercising and walking. I will try to not be so hard on myself. Thanks everyone
Hi Kim, I am a little over 6 months anterior THR and even though I am back to work full time 12 hour shifts, I still will need to use my ice pad for some slight swelling and pain after working 3 in a row. I will resort back to the cane while walking in the house for extra support until my hip feels strong enough to support myself again without it. So I believe it's true what everyone says that it can take a year or more to completely heal from this type of surgery. At least that's what I am counting on. Good luck with your recovery !
Thanks kelly. Im sure it will be ok. Good luck with your recovery. Whats the old saying..Slow and sure wins the race. My consultant did say that progress may be a little slower as I have un-cemented... but I really started so well and now feel frustrated... Good luck with your progress and thanks for your comment. Sometimes we just need confirmation that things are going ok.
