Hip and Back Ache

I have been told and read it also that you can't have R.A. in your back.  I am having real problems with my back and hips right now.  Has anyone else suffered there?  Thanks

Hi Cindy

I also read that but my rheumatologist said the

mri I had done showed wide spread arthritis in my large joints and started me on mmethotrexate in may but have got worst and local doctor sent me

to hospital last week and a doctor that deals

with nerve endings said I've 2 problems one in my back and the other in my hip

and started me on other tablet as well as methotrexate and is arranging an

injection and told me to dissuss the hip pain with my rheumatologist

so waiting to get a appointment.

Anything positive will let you know.

Yes please do.  I'm also on methotrexate.  It is driving me insane and I can't sleep at night nor sit for very long.  I have osteo arthritis and osteoporosis in my left hip.  I have gone to a chiropractor which helps me for a few hours and also am so desperate I'm trying yoga to stretch the muscles.  I work out almost every day and while I'm working out I'm not in any pain.  Hopefully something will help.

Of course RA can be found in the spine. Just google for all the credible medical references.

But if you have pain in the spine you might want to run an HLA-B27 antigen test. Some 90-95% of all people with Anklylosing Spondylitis are positive for this antigen. [Doesn't mean that if you're positive that you have AS, though.]

OA and RA are two totally different diseases.

Thanks for the info. I'll ask my rheumatologist about the test. I do know the difference between OA and RA.  I have had OA for more than 10 years, I've had my auto immune desease for only 18 months.  Once again thanks for all the great advice!

Hi Cindy,

Just to say you are not alone in suffering back and hip pain with R.A. You didn't say what meds you are taking....or if you have had any investigations into it. It seems the medical profession would prefer to deny that hip and back pain ARE associated with R.A. I have read that they can be. Also, unfortunately Osteoposis and the side effects of some of the drugs used in our treatment can cause it....I hope this might help.....

I'm on metho, plaquenil and sulfazine.  Almost 61 and until I was diagnosed 18 months ago, never had a back ache.  Yes it could be ostero arthritis, I've had that for years and I have osteroporisis.  I know the two are totally different.  Maybe I have the arthritis in the back and it was just a coincidence but glad to hear that it may be related and I'm not crazy. Thanks!
