I'm 33 and I have had my right hip hurting me since as long as I can remember, I been through all sorts of pain medication, tens unit, hip injectstions, physical therapy, chiropractor. I seen doctor after doctor. Had muplutiple mri, cat scans, it wasn't until last year they did a arthrogram a found I had a labral tear. I went and had arthroscopic surgery to fix the tear, they used anchors with partial detriment and fixed an impingment, they noted I had some cartilage damage but no arthritis. Since then I completed physical therapy, but my hip has been worse, it still feels like it pinches, it locks, my leg buckles, my pain is only in the front part. It pops and it is incredibly painful. I can't sit for long periods or stand, it feels full and lots of pressure. I have tried everything from foam rolling, to pain medications to tens unit, acupuncture, physical therapy. I can't do it any more, I went back to my doctor they redid a arthrogram but they did not find anything wrong. I'm beside myself. On average my hip will pop up to 10 sometimes 20 times a day out almost feels like it is out of place. What should I do? Any thoughts of what this could be? They did x- rays nothing, the only thing they mention is I have mild dysplasia of that hip, I even went to see someone who does PAOs and I didn't not qualify. Any suggests would be much appreciated.
Hi Linsey,
I am 33 years old too with hip dyplasia. I had a total hip replacement three months ago. But that was because the cartilage was very effected in my hip with arthiritis.i had bad pain too before surgrey. I would try another opinon in another orthopaedic hospital.
Hi Linsey
Sorry you are struggling with the hip pain, it does make you wonder how they can keep saying its OK, if it's OK why does it hurt, I'm the same and I'm going to demand MRI tomoz and another xray, you have had these and more so not sure what to suggest.
Displasia is part of your problem and I can imagine that could cause pain, look up distonia as well I have this and it causes spasms which are horrendous and very painful, they make me feel like hips refractured or dislocated.
I hope you get it sorted, keep us posted.
Hi Linsey,
I am 33 years old too. Had a LTHR on the 22nd September due to dysplasia. Was always in pain and limping. Now no hip pain and am recovering but still walking w 1cane. Now other pain came but will go away as I get better. Ask your doctor whether a THR would be best fir you or advise otherwise.
Big hugs
I will look into that, thank you.
I'm scared to ask about a THR, I just made my appointment today for December 15th. So we will see what happens. Frank you will keep updated.
I am sorry to say that I think you need insist on seeing another consultant whom will take another look at your situation and problems. It is not acceptable to be left not being able to stand or sit for very long. An xray will not always show all of the damage or problems with your hip.
You need to be frank and tell them you are finding the situation unbearable. You will not be the first person to be told there is very little to worry about, only to see for the consultant to discover during the surgery that the joint is in very bad condition....do not despair many people on here have this issue. No one really listens until you put your foot down (no pun intended)
I am 40yrs and had a THP in Dec - it was the best thing I ever did - no more pain. Good luck I hope it goes well for you at your next app.
It is normal to be scared of major surgery, but you can't possibly carry on as you are, and I doubt it will get better out of the blue - you are still young and deserve to have a pain free and active life. My experience of THP has been hugely successful. I am happier and more active than I have been in years and years. Good luck with your app on the 15th
Hi Linsey,
I have been diagnosed with hip dysplasia and am about to undergo my first of 2 PAOs on the 24th of this month... Eeeek! I've had problems with my hips for years, ever since I can remember, and was referred to Guys in London. I have had 2 labral tears fixed (one on each hip) with arthroscopies and debridements as they wanted to try that first due to it being a less major/invasive surgery, but the pain came back so am now having the PAOs. My consultant advised this with no scans or anything but then he had already seen the state of my hips with the previous 2 surgeries... I asked him whether we needed to do more scans so we could see how bad the dysplasia is but he actually said that X-Rays and scans are useless a lot of the time as you are lying down in them so can't see the problem... He has a point i think as lying down is sometimes the only relief I have as can't stand or sit for long periods of time...! As there aren't (as far as I know!) any scans where you can sit so you can really see the issue with the joints, in the problem positions, it is therefore sometimes harder to see the damage being done, I guess.
I don't know if any of that information helps as maybe the people you have seen are unaware of this with your scans....? I totally agree with other comments though, you should try and get another consultant/second opinion. Where are you based?
Hope you get it sorted.

Thank you all for your comments and advise, mostly your concerns. Update, I went to a second opinion he said he had been studying my case for some time. He said that a PAO, would be masking my problem because I had a multifunctional issue with my right hip and he believes the only thing that would correct my multiple issues would be a total hip replacement. The issues were retorn labral, mild dysplasia, instability, tendon riding over the bone, cartilage damage, to which he did not know the extent of until he goes in. So I decided to go ahead and have my hip replaced at 33, my surgery was January 4th 2017. They did anterior approach. He said I was bone on bone and had developed arthritis, which was very severe. It was a good thing I chose this route instead of pushing for a PAO. I honestly believe I would still be having problems. I am now happy and guess what, pain free. Don't get me wrong I still have here's and there's. But I'm so much better. If you feel or think something is not right listen to your body. I hope you all find relief like I did. Hugs.
