Hip replacement pain continues 20 months on - fractured femur

Hi Jayive

I've been to the consultant tonight as well.

The hip fracture is getting sorer rather than better.

He did X Rays and said nothing had changed so he's sending me for a day procedure in 2 weeks time. A needle into my hip to withdraw fluid to check that I havent got an infection.

I agree with you about being sore after the X Rays......not nice being twisted about is it ?

MY BP is sky high so got to see my GP

Its no wonder....being in hospitals always sends it soaring  lol

Love

Eileen

Hi Eileen,

I sounds as though you are going through the mill as well, poor you. I also had an aspiration (withdrawal of fluid from the joint) which came back negative some months ago but the surgeon said yesterday I needed to have blood taken to check again.

I was sedated for the aspiration and guess you'll be the same so nothing to worry about there. I didn't feel it.

At least the sun is shining and it promises to be a nice day, I'm just waiting for my pain meds to work then I'll try to do my exercises.

Hi Jayive

We are both going through the mill  aren't we?

I hope mine comes back negative but if it does then what is the cause of the extra pain.....I dont want them to find an infection!!

Glad yours came back negative.

Were you under GA.....its going top be a local for me.

In fact he laughed at me last night when he saw me {he's lovely} and said you dont need to fast it will be a local and we'll make sure you can see the camera and see whats happening

I've had the same sort of thing before except it was an injection.....but long needle, guided in by them watching a camera. They knew i wanted to be nosey so positioned me so i could see whats happening LOL

The injection didnt work

Yes the sun is shining here. The routine in the morning is we have a travel kettle and cups upstairs, Peter makes a drink...he gets back into bed and reads, I go onto the computer, drink my tea, have my painkillers and about half an hour or  45 mins later They are usually kicking in a bit!!

So I get ready.....today Perter was going out walking {he's fit...not like me LOL} So I got into the car, drove to our Shopping centre which is large....did quite a bit of walking {not shopping} Then nbipped into Starbucks and sat for about 30 mins having a coffee.

I'm home now but will be going to yoga soon.

Its yoga for "older ladies"  A lot of it is standing but some of it is on the yoga mats....well if I got down I would never get up again LOL so she adapts those exercises for me ...which is good.

Enjoy your day

Hi Eileen

Sorry for your painful experience.Could you tell me what medication you were on for osteoporosis? I was first diagnosed with osteoporosis back in the 90s.Am currently taking alendronic acid (Fosomax) once a week but very worried about the more serious side effects....in relation to a THR.

Being very cowardly I am still undecided about a hip replacement.

There seems to be too little info. about  osteoporosis and THR.

Wishing you the best for your recovery, which I will follow with interest.

Joy x

Hi Joy

Before my 2nd THR I wasnt on anything for osteoporosis.

In their wisdom the GP's decided osteopinia did not need medication. Even though it had been 2 years since I was diagnosed with this and was due another scan in11 months and was quite likely to have OP by now no one said dont do that exercise etc.

After the fracture still nothing done so I rang the GP and they got me an earlier appointment which diagnosed OP So was put on Alendronic Acid but it didnt agree with me.....I was sick for the full day that I took it so I've been changed on to risedronate....I've only taken one of those so its hard to tell.

My first THR was fine.

Hi Eileen

The reason I asked is that I have discovered scary info. re. side effects of Alendronic Acid.

I have had osteoporosis since early 90s but was unwilling to go ont HRT as prescribed at the time,so did nothing for 15 years supposing that as I had not taken advice there was no alternatrive.

However when I asked my GP for a scan ( 15 years later) it was arranged and Proletus was prescribed. This was withdrawn from use eventually,so back to doing nothing.Did not want to take A.A.

At least I am now scheduled for 2 yearly scans and at the last one was advised to take theA.A. which I have been on for nearly 2 years now.

Having meanwhile developed a dodgy hip friends and family are trying to convince me that THR is a doddle as evidenced by their many aquaintances. I am not so sure!

One of the worrying side effects of Alendronic Acid is possible thigh fracture, after taking the med.for some time.

A friend of mine complained that her GP has taken her off A.A.She believes it is due to NHS cutbacks.I think her GP is on the ball, and she is lucky to have him.

There is growing opinion that sometimes the cure is worse than the desease, and the best way to deal with osteoporosis is taking care to avoid falls.

I know that I often forget my age and try to dash about as before resulting in falls.Since having OA and the dodgy hip,I am more careful and do not fall.I recently got a walking stick which helps on many levels....steadies me on uneven groud....reminds me to be careful, and alerts others to my condition.

Clearly there lots of things to consider, and we need all the information we can get.

I am relieved for you that the bone will heal itself, but sorry for the extended recovery peroid for you.Just the usual time is bad enough!

Take good care of yourself and everything will be OK eventually.

Tank you for your reply to me.

Sorry about the errors, but I am sure you get the gist.Having some problems with internet connection,a bit erratic due to being in Cyprus.

Decided that if I do go for THR it would be a good idea to improve general fitness as much as possible.

So lots of swimming which is more comfortable than walking, and a good diet which I find easier here than at home.

But maybe I am just putting off the inevitable. As friends and family say I should go for THR before I get any older.I am 78 now.

Hi Joy, I am currently taking vit C and rose hips C- 1000mg twice daily, calcium & vit D 5ug vit D and 800 mg calcium twice daily, seven seas health oil & vit D 25ug vit D and about 900 mg various fish oils once daily plus 2 glucosamine tablets daily. How much magnesium would you suggest I take, and should I be cutting out any of the others ?? Would be very grateful for advice cos in the UK advice is often very sketchy or just plain inconsistently!!! Thanks for all your good advice love Maggie xxxxx

Ps Joy, have only been taking these supplements for the past 3 weeks or so. The rest of my bones seem to be pretty healthy and if poss I intend to keep them that way !!!!! Thanks Maggie xxxxx

Hi Gloriajoy

The tablet I'm taking now is the same familyas Alendronic Acid so got to admit I'm a bit worried.

My first THR was fine...no problem at all

The second one ws OK as far as the op went.....it was just doing NHS exercises afterwards that fractured the hip but because of the osteoporosis not the THR

I'm 68

Sometimes I do wish I hadnt had the 2nd one because of the fracture but on the other hand it could have been fractured some other way

I dont know....its done now and i just have to live with it

Hi Eileen

I have no wish to cause alarm, but believe we should be given all facts.

Clearly no drugs are without side effects, the thing is to weigh the benefits versus the downside.

I found an online site just typed in---Fosomax the side effects--- and it came up on the screen.

The site is by a legal firm,so some heed should be paid to their vested interest in finding clients who have problems. This is in the US which is a very litigious society.

Sadly we seem to be going in that direction in UK too.Not a good thing in my opinion as it could inhibit the medical proffession, making them less likely to take progressive decisions lest they be subjected to claims.

We need our NHS to be progressive and ready to advance medical practise.

There are no easy answers and we are all different, with our different physical conditions.

I am at least reassured that you have been told your fracture will heal by itself !!,albeit with increased time and suffering for you sadly.

Time passes though,as someone said "Life is what happens while we are making other plans".

Annoying that you were only doing the right thing in doing the excersises.

Everyone says that is important, but maybe you should have been warned to take it gently.Whatever,we are always wise after the event.

Take care

Hi Joy

Yes I agree all drugs be they OTC/prescribed/Natural   all have side effects and we have to weigh up the pros and cons.

I dont really like American sites......I would rather have a UK one

Yes I think I should have been warned because of {at least} osteopinia.....probably osteoporosis but that hadnt been diagnosed at that time.

I have OA in various joints, spinal stenosis, osteoporosis, kyphoscoliosis and they are all "Chronic Degenerative"......I can cope with those.....I can "manage those" I'm an Arthritis Care Volunteer......its this fracture that isnt chronic that I find hard to cope with because I keep expecting it to get better

I think I would be better if I thought of it as chronic and concentrated on how to do things with crutches  etc LOL

In fact it is chronic....I think the proper definition for chronic is pain that last more than 3 months.....well 7 and a half months now.

Thanks for your reply
