Hip Replacement Surgery Recovery Room Pain

I just had LHR surgery and I experienced excruciating pain in the recovery room. Has anyone else experienced this?

Tell the recovery nurse, the nurse on duty, the doctor. I was on hydromorphone for the first 36 hours and didn't have the pain

dear linda,

I agree with Saltspringer and hope you are pain free right now and sleeping -

Hi Linda

Yes I did and morphine made me sick. So I was given tramadol. It does get easier as the days move on but for some of us it's very painful. Make sure you tell the nurses it's not a time for bravery.

There is light at the end of the tunnel I promise

Take care

Julie

I had an epidural and so no pain imediately afterwards. Did you have a general anaesthetic?

don't even remember the recovery room; I woke up in my bed about 2.5 hours after going into theatre.

Yes!! This happens to me. The nurse woke me up in the recovery room and I freaked out. The pain was so intense my whole body was shaking and my teeth were chattering for 15 minutes. The nurse was surprised and said this doesn't usually happen. I was screaming for pain meds. They gave me something in my iv , I think dilauded?  But It took a while for me to calm down. For the rest of my hospital stay I was scared and stayed on top of my meds. They had a chart on the wall for when I could have more and I watched it like a hawk!  I had RTHR on June 23rd. My surgery was great and I don't remember anything. I had an epidural and twilight anesthesia.

I was in horrific pain and I don't know what if anything they gave me. The nurse kept saying she had given me all she could and I needed to calm down!

I am home now and the pain is under control. I've had many surgeries and never had this experience.

hi linda,

Hi Linda

Sure you will start to feel better now you are home. Don't stop the meds even if you think you don't need them they keep the pain at a low threshold. I'm sure you know that though. Enjoy the sunshine. Chill out and look after yourself.

Best wishes julie

Thank you for your reply.  I had a general and I'm going to ask the hospital what they gave me.  I have been on morphine for a few years plus hydromorphone as needed because of herniated discs and some people have said they couldn't give me more pain medicine because of that. I had leukemia and I can't find a surgeon to operate on my back.   However, this hospital didn't carry the morphine I've been taking - they had to use my personal prescription.  I will be asking for a list of what they did give me.  I've never been in that kind of pain before, and I've had several surgeries.    They just kept telling me to calm down, which is impossible when you are in that kind of pain.  I remember asking the nurse if she could put me back under it was so bad.  I wonder if I was in the wrong kind of surgery center for what I needed.

hi linda,

Hi, 10 days after my second hip replacement . I woke up in recovery with horrendous pain ! It lasted most of day , eased off  next day but back on 3rd day .

Defo didn't have pain like that the first time .

All ok now tho , pain as I remember .

Doing well just wish I could sleep on my side !!!!!

good luck

Thank you for your response. After I left Recovery, they tried to work on pain and I'm now pretty much pain free. Were you on pain meds before the surgery?

I was on strong dose of co codamol. Had my staples out today feel much more comfortable. Friend in medical profession said it was prob what they didn't give us rather than what they did?
