Hip Replacement

Hi, I had my total hip replacement operation 4 weeks ago. Recovery has been good but for the past 8 or 9 days have experienced thigh pain, some days more painful than others.  Wondering if this is normal and if anyone else has experienced this?

i'm 3 weeks post op and experiencing pain in the front of my hip above the thigh.  my physical therapist thinks i strained my hip flexor.  where on your thigh is the pain?

Hi,thanks for replying, the pain in mid thigh, so a little lower than your pain, it's not stopping me doing my exercises etc., if it's normal then that's fine, just a bit worried

Hi Christine,

It is always safe to let your doc know of any changes that worry you. My rule of thumb for deciding how and when to act upon the change, is dependent upon how long the new symptoms persist. 8 or 9 days in my book is a long time. Be safe.

i'm not a dr but...

it sounds like your pain is far away from anything directly related to your hip (it sounds like something related to your quadracep, the muscle that allows you to straighten your leg from a sitting position).  if i'm right, it shouldn't be a major worry, but it is something to raise with your physical therapist.

Not sure if its relevant but I had mine beginning Dec and its been painful this last week but it may be that I have been doing to much dog walking (and stick throwing). Physio has said that if it hurts take life a little easier on the basis that you have had major surgery.Good luck

I have had thigh pain also, but it is due to a strained muscle.  I am 4 weeks post op.  physical therapist says its because im using my muscles differently.  You should def talk to your doctor about it though.  I see mine on feb 18 and plan to discuss then.  good luck

Hi, I am 4 and a half months into my thr and have been experiencing pain in z midtheigh causing me to limp.  Hip area is fine tho.  ( I have written in regarding leg length being off causing pain in the back.  Also haven't received my 100  percent energy back.  I'm 72 and feeling my age especially with arthritis pain.

Thanks Ginny I also have an appointment next week so will discuss hoping its just muscle strain, thanks

Hi Christine

I think one of the probelms we hippies have is that as you solve the hip problem, other physical faults to come to the fore. I had my hip done and then suffered back pain which according to my physio was always there but took second place to he hip pain. Physio has loosened it up and whilst not feeling like a 25 year old, it appears to be a lot better

Hi Christine

I had a total hip replacement 16 weeks ago. Everything was going great and then at week 5 I developed mid thigh pain, some days was really bad, others not so much. I went back to the doctor at week 6 and told him about it. He said I had overworked the leg. I took it easy but the pain continued, at week 12 went back to see the doctor and the xray showed that the femoral implant had shifted and that was why my mid thigh hurt when I would put weight on my leg. Call your doctor, have them do xrays and make sure everything is fine. I am now hoping that the bone will stablize the shifted implant so I don't have to have revision surgery. I will find out in two weeks. Good luck and take it easy.

Thanks Annette, I am fearful that my problem is due to the femoral implant shifting as I didn't have this problem initially.  I am seeing my consultant next week for x-ray and will discuss, will keep you updated, hope you get good news in 2 weeks.
