Well my lovely hipster friends , i am finally having my total hip Replacemnt in 10 days ..had the phone call earlier ...Feeling nervous , as I'm having it on a Thursday do you think they will keep me in all weekend ?
I live alone so the longer the better i suppose ...if any one can advise me or even reassure me i will be grateful
Hi Mandy how much better will you feel when its done, no more permanent pain.
Yes I would imagine that because they know you are on your own you will stay in and if they decide to allow you out depending on your age and mobility and your general health they will send you for rehab.
I'm sure that they want just chuck you out LOL
You will be surprised how quick they get you moving.
Hi Mandy, it all depends on how you recover but most keep you a minimum of 3 days under the enhanced recovery programme. I was in 5 days as I got an infection. It wasnt in the wound but I needed iv antibs. However they wont let you out until everything is in place at home. Do you have someone who can stay with you initially. I assume that you have been advised on what equipment you will require at home and that this will be in place when you go home? Good luck.
Hello Mandy. I had my THR on Thursday 22 June. I, too, live alone. I didn't want anyone staying with me. Hospital mentioned rehab but I didn't want that. In the UK we are entitled to 6 weeks free care at home. The day after op, it was arranged for the Rapid Response team to start calling twice daily to help me wash and dress. I stayed in hospital until Monday. Carers were due in Monday evening. 8 days later, I'm still waiting for them to arrive!!! RAPID RESPONSE !!
I'm coping extremely well and had prepared
As much as I could before op. Friends call in throughout day and I haven't relied on them too much. You'll be fine. Are you in UK?? X
Hi Mandy. I had my surgery on a Thursday and was out on Saturday. It would have been Friday if I hadn't needed a blood transfusion the day after the surgery. I had the anterior approach. I expect they will give consideration to how you are doing and what support you have on discharge so my advice would be to stay in the hospital as long as you can as it's tough in the first few days but that soon passes. Good luck.
Hello Sara. How are you doing? I hope everything is progressing well. I'm doing fine. Have to stop myself from doing too much. Now that awful pain has gone, I'm beginning to feel like the old me again! Cut back too soon on pain relief because I didn't feel I needed it, but I did! Am learning to take things a bit slower and do as I was told! Scar healed lovely and am getting around in doors without crutches.
Hip aches at times but thatsbmy fault for overdoing things. Xx
Hi Carol. Great to hear you are doing well. I hadn't realised you were on your own which sounds very brave. I relied on my husband for the first few days particularly as I was still feeling faint but that's now passed and back to being independent. I'm doing really well too. I'm on one crutch but not really putting any weight on it so my physio was saying I should be able to get rid of it when I see her again this Thursday. I'm really pleased with my scar too. It's about 10 cms and very neat. I also get hip ache too if I do too much, I did an hour walk on Saturday and some shopping in town and then realised I'd done too much. I can definitely see I'm getting better each day so that's the main thing. X
Hi Carol , thanks for the info ...glad your doing ok . Am in South Wales , and also having the op on Thursday ..i have to go in night before to be put on insulin pump , good thing about that is i should be first down on the Thursday .... I am used to strugglingaroind the house , just concerned about recovery as i am riddled with ostio arthritis and fibro ..
As i am going in on a cancellaion , i didnt go to the meeeting thing with all the healh professionals so i am going in cold turkey lol ....
i hope you are looking after your self , i have no idea what aproach i am having , am being done on a cancellation , so have had no info , though i am going in the day before op as i am isulin dependent so i should have more info then , x
I live on my own in the UK and suffered an accident in the passenger ambulance whilst being brought home and found that any at home help was first very difficult to source and was means tested. I think if you had more than 16k in savings you had to pay which is what happened to me.
Hi , i am ghoing in from a cancellation , so have got no info ..i have things in place though as i am disabled so pretty much ok here apart from making sure i can get things easy when i come out ....x
Hi Mandy/Caroil, the ward should be set up that the physios and OT see you every day. As you are cancellations they will sort out any equipment you require before you leave. Don't worry aboput anything, If you don't want the sedation ask the anesatist to give you a generral. I had epidural and general, my surgeon said you dont want to be awake whilst Im banging and sawing! Ask the anestatist
Mandy I live on my own apart from the nurse coming to change my dressing I have been on my own had visitors one day who stayed whilst I had a shower and washed my hair. They also helped with a few tasks and kept me company for awhile which was a great change.
Awe thanks Ann....To be honest i predetermined to be on my own apart from when needing help .....How often do the nurse see to dressings ? And how are you recovering ...hope you are doing really well x
All I can say is that I followed all leads over the course of several days and I was informed that care at home was means tested so ended up with paying for about three weeks of 3/4 hour support each evening costing me about £300.00.
I would have loved to have been able to have achieved a better outcome.
I had my 2nd THR on a Thursday and was discharged on Monday per my request because I live alone too .. so 4 nights ...
PT in the hospital will teach you how to get out and in to bed, walk steps/stairs and some exercises - 7
but ask, okay ? not all hospitals have the same procedure -
may I ask what kind of disability you have ? how are you moving around ?
good to hear that you bhave everything in place ... I am assuming the raised toilet seat, grabbers, maybe sock-aid , raised bed, chair and plenty of DVD's and food ...
come back here anytime and let us know how you are getting on ...
Nurse came I week after op and I only have to remove it myself a week later which is this Thursday don't have to replace it have disposable stitches.
Found a way to cover the bandage with paper towels bin liner and packing tape. Looked weird but worked. Doing well with most things but bored because the weather is restricting my walks.
Hi Mandy. I'm replying because I was just discharged today and I thought it might be interesting to provide a (NZ) perspective while the details are fresh in my mind.
My THR was in fact a reworking of a femoral neck fracture repair 18 months ago which never knit properly. I was admitted 6:30 am last Friday, went to theatre 8:30, out of surgery at lunchtime, physio on Saturday (out of bed, 5 metres on walking frame), Sunday (20 metres on crutches, up and down mock stairs), Monday (100 metres on crutches, more stair work), Tuesday (today - Exercycle), discharged at 11 am. Obviously everone's mileage will vary, but in general here they push you as hard as they can without compromising your safety - to free up the bed, but mainly because they don't want you to lose condition by lying around in bed. They made it very clear that you don't get to go home with their blessing until you have ticked the boxes, including pain under control, home help and mobility aids sorted, independent tolieting, safe getting about, bowels and bladder working again, ongoing physio in place. I'm sure that's the same for everywhere.
You mentioned you live alone. I would strongly recommend that you have someone with you for the first day or so and that they are familiar with all the do's and don'ts of a THR rehabilitation, especially sitting and lying, getting down and up, toiletting, in a way that doesn't put you at risk of dislocation.
