honeymoon in 3 weeks .scared il get dizzy on the flight

Hi .

I am flying to malta in 3 weeks ,onl y 3 hour flight but im really scared i will get dizzy on the flight and whilst im away. Is their anyone who has been on a flight or on holiday and has any tips they can pass on to me to try and prevent this from happening . My doctor has given me stemitel tabs to take before i get on the plane .im just wondering what any of you guys have taken (if anything) while flying. i do not get travel sick but i get very anxious before a holiday abroad .

Would appreciate any ideas. oh and i dont drink so cant do that to relax me .x

Take some slices of fresh ginger and chew them during the flight. It helps me. Enjoy your trip!

Hi Lyn - like you, I was really anxious over the flying ordeal I recently endured. The good news was everything went smoothly. My flight was three hours and I suffer miserably with Meniere's Disease. Dizziness, vertigo, spinning, tinnitus, loss of hearing and distorted hearing are some of it's annoying features. I did the following: Bought ear plugs, called EarPlanes.. They cost me almost 10 dollars and fit directly into the ear canal. I also made sure to bring chewing gum to force me to swallow. I took 60mgs of sudafed one hour prior to the flight and also used a nose spray.

My thinking is your dizziness is not caused by the same problem I have, nonetheless the steps I took helped with the cabin pressure, especially on take off and landing. I had the best 7 days to celebrate our anniversary and I'm also thinking barometric pressure between where I live and Orlando, Florida differed in my favor.

My doctor also suggested prednisone and xanax for the anxiety which I didn't want to get involved with and I was happy I didn't. I did not touch any alcohol, before, during or after, either.

Good luck and I'm hoping your trip goes as well as mine. My flight was 3 hours also and it was so pleasurable not to deal with spinning, dizziness or vertigo. I wish you the same.

Agree with Glenn on all those things. You could also pop into Holland and Barrett and get some Cocculus, (Homeopathic) which good for jet lag and travel sickness.(But also dizzzy stuff) i take before i go on public transport as i sometimes feel, travel, sick on buses. (And after i get home sometimes too as I tend to get a delayed reaction from movement)

the rule for homepathics is no mint flavoured things, sweets, mouthwash etc. TOo close,to taking, as that counteracts, and 20 mins before or after eating.

If i get head pressure feeling i use a cold, pack on neck which seems to calm that down too. But hard on a plane i know. However could, take one with you to,have in hotel,if you have a mini bar fridge or freezer in the room. Failing that ice cubes in ziplock bag!

i also carry those 'hot head' sticks you get in Poundland for nausea on public transport and good for head, too if headaches (As long as you aren't averse to the smell, which i personally like)!

what part of Malta you going to?

hi glen .

Thank you for your reply ,Im not sure what causes my dizzyness really, mine is not a room spinning experiance ,its hard to explain ,the only way i can explain it is i can be looking at the tv one minuete and then if i look  away everything takes a second to catch up with what im looking at if that makes sence. this happens at least twice a month and has been happening for about 2 years . i dont get any other symptoms .i will try your suggestions and thank you

Hi Lyn,

I dreaded going to Spain recently, a 3hr flight, doc advised nasal decongestant spray daily for 1 week before flight, then spray 1 hour before take-off, and again 1 hour before descent, I'm glad to say I didn't have any problems, unlike previous flight which resulted in vertigo & nausea for approx 3 months, so you can see why I was worried. I'm now doing a 10 hour flight to the USA in September, so I'll do exactly the same as I did for the trip to Spain. Hope all goes well for you and you have a great time.

hi gillian.thank you for your reply .we are going to Mellieha in malta. i will estionstry your suggest ions...can i ask what you mean by a delayed reaction on movement? do you mean when you turn head to look at something you get a delayed reaction in catching up ?x

Both! I get that 'drag' feeling which causes the dizzy thing, hence I dont  move my head too quickly from side,to,side anymore! The other type,of  delayed' reaction i get is,if I've done a lot of extra movement day before, eg, shopping, bus travel, gardening, I feel awful next day. V.tired, which always seems to make my dizzy stuff worse.  Same if i get a headache, or upset tummy, dizzy stuff worse, no idea why!

i've learned to,plan my busy days so,I dont do too much day before or day after.

oh i see ,delayed reaction u mean next day feeling crap ok sorry i thought you meant a dizzy sensation but with no room spinning . have you been diagnosed with anything associated with dizziness ?

Yes I have the dizzy sensation too, (not room spinning) on head movements,  I have it when looking down and upwards, too! I learned that this is,due,to eyes, ears and Vestibular system is basically out of Sync.  Eyes, trying to compensate all, time etc etc.

the best diagnosis, the Hospital,in London could, come up,with was 'Chronic Disequilibrium'!  yes it is associated with dizziness. It started within 24 hours, woke up,with it in fact. Could barely walk to,loo from bedroom. Drs said prob a virus. From that day on it's never gone away for even one day.  Have had,to,learn to,live withnit.

hiya. thanks for your reply. what was the name of the decongestant you used ?

Hi, don't know if you can use brand names here, but I'll try, it's Sudafed.

Agree with Glenn 100%. Avoid alcohol. My doc told me she has given Prednisone to ppl after a flight who got dizzy after the trip. I been avoiding planes for fear of problems.

I have never had vertigo whilst flying and read that flying did not cause it?!  Try to keep your head in a stable position, dont turn sharply as I find this causes the dizziness sometimes.   Take something for the anxiety.   Try the wrist straps for the dizziness, ginger to settle the stomach.   And enjoy!

hi thank you .il give it a go .fingers crossed x
