How long till stop limping?

Hi fellow hippies : )  I am 9 weeks post op, I know everyone is different, but I thought I might be able to get a general estimate, if some of you would be kind enough to share when you finally could walk without limping? Thank you.

i had my op on feb 18th and i still limp unless i focus - and when i stand up i can hardly walk at all for a minute or 2!

Hi Dawn. Entering week 7 and no support indoors, 2 poles when out, no limping. Last 2 days have had pain in groin and top of femur. Check up week 8. Able to walk 3 miles without a rest

I dont know why but sometimes I will have no soreness or pain at all and still limp, maybe because of stifness or there is still a little swelling, but it worries me because I worry one leg is shorter now or something.. I go to doc on wed. maybe she will measure for me

True we all recover differently. For me I had the anterior approach so recovery is a bit different. No restrictions. At week 5 doing physio exercises 3 times a day my leg felt stronger. I practiced walking unaided in,the, house, making sure to stand tall and watch my gait at first it was only a few steps then I increased it till finally I,had compared the limp. That's my story.. I'm now going into my 8th week. I walk outside 3 times a day for about 20 minutes and do not limp anymore.

Think we all fret about something as we are dealing with the unknown and no 2 hippies experience the same. A lot depends on how we were pre op, age and state of bones. Me 66 with severe osteoporosis making recovery a little longer

Hi well done you! I am just over 8 weeks!I am still on a stick aass I have a problem with my right knee! Having had my right hip done!also in time I will have to have my left hip done! I am also my husband s carer! Not easy! Regards Amanda

Hi Dawn, I'm just comeing up to 7 weeks post op. can walk quite well with one stick, but limp really bad if I try without a stick, get a pain on the outside of my thigh, its not a bad pain , just anoying, it may be muscle, I'm not sure. But it different for all of us, my bother in law , was walking without a stick at 4 weeks. Dont worry it will sort it self out .

Hi.  I am now nearly nine Weeks The physio gave me  some  quite hard exercises to do.  I thought I was doing ok but we mustn't forget the months of limping about in agony we did before op.  I too thought my legs felt different length but she measured me and all is well.  Had a really long walk today with a stick (due to uneven ground).  Maybe my walk isn't perfect yet  but it's better than it was before!  Can't bowl yet just three more weeks now. Don't expect perfection or be too hard on yourself it will come.  I am sure I still have a slight limp but am practising.  Good luck.

The physio should tell you how to improve your posture and stop limping,

I dont have a physio maybe my doc will give me one wednesday

neither my surgeon nor my physio concerned about limping, both said concentrate on strengthening thigh muscles with exercise and the limp will go - i still use a crutch at work because 1200 11 -18 yr olds rushing about the building at break and lunch need to know not to bump into me!!

I'm 12 weeks post op & haven't used stick or crutches for a couple of weeks now. Most of the time I am fine but I still struggle when I first get up to walk & if I try to do too much.

My physio told me to concentrate on putting weight on both legs evenly & I do try to do that whenever I can. It'still darly das, thris no way you can rush these things.

Hi,  I am also nine weeks and a couple of weeks ago I posted a similar post to yours. I was limping and loosing faith I had great support from this forum but my physio was pushing me to walk unaided without limping! So I got an exercise bike. I'm up to twelve minutes a day now and can feel a difference. I can walk unaided and NO LIMPING. My thigh feels stronger. Give it a try.

Hiya, I'm now 14 weeks post op. In the mornings I'm absolutely fine no aches, no limp. But sometimes as the day goes on I get an ache and start limping. My GP says when it aches, rest. So that is now what I do. It doesn't happen every day and like you said, we're all different. Listen to your own body

Thank you Susan good to know these things are normal for some of us. Think the older we are the longer it takes

I walked with no aids right between weeks 4 and 5. I focused very very muck on posture, then heel toe, my focus was on doing it right, not distance. Because I always focues first and foremost on posture I never limped. Distance and endurance is NOT your goal, correct posture iS the goal. Endurance and distance come later. Only walk as far as you can walk with correct & proper posture, Head up, shoulders back, straight back then heel toe. Once you can't continue with correct posture then stop. At 2 months I walked fine but not really for miles at a time. At 2 months plus 2 weeks I went on a vacation to Barcelona, never rented a car, took an airplane, trains and busses, inclding standing to wait for them, and did great. Of course at night i took over the counter pain relief, but no big deal. If you have proper posture you are not going to limp.

but Jodi I dont agree, I have great posture

I am now around 14 weeks THR. I am 59 years young.  I had a big limp or wobble before for the surgery. Now I can walk and people tell me how much better I look. ....no limp!  I think I noticed it was better about 10 weeks out. I have scoliosis so I always don't have the best posture, but I try. When I get tired I sit and rest or lay down if I can.  Keep trying!
